For what it's worth, I've had my dealership perform 3 oil changes, and each receipt says that they have put 5W30 oil in my 2001 SCrew.

Does that mean that the dealer has voided my warranty? I doubt it.

On another note, I've been considering switching to synthetic oil. Lots of people are saying good things about Amsoil, but they all seem to be selling it as well. Is this stuff strictly a multi-level marketing product? If it is, I think I'll stick to Mobil 1. Just a personal hang-up of mine.

My 2001 F-150 SuperCrew Owner's Guide, page 157:
Also on the last page under Filling Station Information" it calls out 5W-30. This is the Oct 1999 printing of this manual, and I got my Screw last July practically right off the trailer from Kansas City. 'Nuff said.

Cool

I've got a Gen I SCrew built in May of 2000. My owner's manual says to use 5w30 everywhere oil is mentioned. One less thing to worry about! I guess if it came down to a warranty issue, those of you doing the 5w30 route could always refer to the Gen I owner's manuals, maybe? I don't have a flatbed scanner or I'd post the pages for you. Maybe another Gen I owner with a flatbed scanner can help out?

hummm...my manual was printed in june 00. apparently somewhere along the road ford switched to recommending 5w20 vs 5w30, for whatever reason.

TroyK:

I gave you the reason in my first post on this thread.

It's the classic case of engineers meeting specs imposed by the federal government who is pressured by environmentalist wackos who are strung out on dope and in dire need of a bath and dose of reality.

Hell, I may go to Mobil 1 15W50 and throw in a pint of Prolong just to **** everyone off.

klooger, ROTFLMAO!

Er, the owner's guide says ix-nay on the additive-ay. Don't tell anyone, but I still put in a small dollop of Slick50 every 3 oil changes. Oh, and I change the Mobil 1 every 3000 anyway. Money well spent on a very expensive engine, IMHO.

klooger et al...

you folks remind me of a guy i used to work with. his car (an olds 88) runs perfectly fine on 87 octane (in fact that is what gm recommends for it). however, he puts nothing but pricey premium in it. for what reason? all i can figure is it makes him feel good to think he is treating his "baby" the right way by spending extra money needlessly on something his car gets no benefit from. as for sythetic oil (and prolong type additives), there may or may not be some benefit if used in extreme applications. for most of us, spending that kind of money is wasteful. i guess if you wanna pad the oil companies wallets more than need be, that's entirely up to you. on the other hand, i suppose there is some solice in thinking you've treated your "baby" like a king...

That's "solace", meaning consolation, and I don't need either solace or consolation. I'm very happy. Yeah, I do treat my baby like a Queen, so what, I can afford it, and besides, I've done it with all my cars since my first - a used "62 VW.

FYI higher octane grades of fuel are cleaner in most cases, and may be a tiny bit better for the system, but I have to run premium due to the superchip anyway. The best stuff is the 100 Octane low-lead they still run in airplanes (if you had a vintage streetrod w/ no cats), but 93 is plenty fine in the modern 5.4L. Unless I had my old hemi 'cuda. Sigh....

Ain't this thread dead yet?

TroyK:

Since you are obviously going to stick around a lot longer than your 5w20 will then let me share something else with you bud.

On my Riviera and Reatta, both with almost 200,000 miles on them I changed the Mobil 1 only after driving it 15,000 miles. Yes, that's right, 15,000 miles. I would only change the filter and add make-up oil when I rotated the tires. I pretty much changed my oil two, maybe, three times per year. Talk about cost effective.........

And I'll bet the oil I pulled out after 15,000 would outperform your virgin 5w20.

I probably won't go that long with my truck though - 10,000 miles should do.

Now put that in your oil pan and smoke it.

The next thing you're going to tell me is that you leased your truck for 24 months........

kloogered;

You could run WD40 in your sled for all we care! If you feel so damn confident about running whatever YOU feel like running then why ask the dealer in the first place? Guess being 100% confident about your fantastic synthetics isn't quite the truth now is it?

Next lame topic PLEASE!!!

klooger,

you're right on! All the other's worried about voiding their precious warranty can go ahead and use what they want, but I'm staying with Mobil 1, 5W-30 - period! Better oil is better! The reccomendations for these exact same engines only a year ago was 5W-30.

n6van:

Look. I started this thread as an FYI. It is ending up to be an FYou. I asked the 5w20 question to the dealer for the benefit of all. I simply had my suspicions about the reason confirmed. People started getting torqued about the warranty issue, owner's manual, blah, blah, blah. I was put to the fire and I gave you my opinion based on my experience and knowledge of the products. I am not trying to convince, entertain, or befriend any of you. I just want to drive my truck with synthetic oil in it. Is that so much to ask?

I swear some of you guys wouldn't know how to wipe your *** without a set of instructions. How did you ever find your way to such a good truck?

$33,000 and you guys want to buy oil for a buck a quart and brag about it!

Brag away my friend...........

That sieze you hear is not this thread ending.....it's YOUR engine.

Like I said, nobody gives a rats A$$ what you do to your truck but DON'T act like your preference for something other than what the manufacture suggests is what everyone else should do! Or that what we do is inferior to what you do! It's like you want approval from everyone that it's OK to add whatever liquids you feel like adding! SO GO AHEAD AND ADD IT! By the way, I didn't pay anywhere near $33,000 for my SCrew and sitting right next to it on the driveway is another GREAT vehicle I didn't pay anything close to $33,000 (see sig) long before you bought your SCrew! SO get off your high horse!
