Gibson SS instructions
I have this system sitting in the basement and just wondering are the instructions ok. Hopefully I will do it this week sometime. It's says cut 17 inches from the converter, has anyone done on and how was the fit.
Thanks

Hi Carolina...
The instructions are accurate. You must cut 17" in front of the stock muffler. I used a hacksaw, laying on my back on the garage floor and it was the hardest part of the entire installation. There's not much "saw-stroke" room when you're cutting the pipe.
After the one cut and the old assembly is loose, you think you might not get it out from under the truck, but surprisingly, it comes out with relative ease.
Also, you really need to cinch down on the clamp nuts, especially the one in the front of the new muffler. I used a 1/2" drive ratchet with a deep socket. Had to put all my might into tightening the nuts down to point where the outer pipe finally crimped over the inner pipe.
One more item....I cut 3" off of the tail piece because it stuck out too far. After you put it in place, I think you'll know what I mean.
Good luck...you'll really like the sound...it's only 6-8 decibels above stock with no droning sound at highway speeds.

CALL GIBSON BEFORE CUTTING!!! I installed the SS Dual Sport on my SCrew a couple weeks ago. I cut 17" in front of the muffler. Unfortunately, it was too far (~6"). After I called Gibson, they said Ford put longer mufflers on the trucks in 2001. Their new measurement was from the back of the muffler. I had to take another vehicle to the muffler shop and get a piece of pipe to connect the exhaust up. The dual sport pipe clamp hit the shock, so I had the kit welded up.

fireman497,
I have a build date of December, 2000 on my 2WD Lariat. I guess I had the shorter muffler. I did notice the Gibson muffler was much larger/longer the stock one.
Sorry you had one of those "Time to change mufflers at the manufacturing plant" model!
This is my second Gibson system. The first one was on my 98 Explorer and I got it for $150; installed by Gibson because they had problems fitting Explorers with the 5.0 liter V8. They used my vehicle for a test fit. Sean Gibson said there were 5 different muffler connections that were installed on the factory Explorers in 1998, just for the 5.0 liter V8! The aftermarket world must be a nightmare with all of the differences in designs/fit.
Hope yours sounds good with the Duals. I've got the SweptSide on mine.
