MrBill:

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles as well. To me, mid-year changes like this are unacceptable. It not only "screws" up resale and KBB values, but it really confuses consumers like us who read the brochures and specs. If it's a 2001, then it should match what's in the 2001 brochure. If it doesn't match, or if the specs change, it should be called something else. How about a 2001.5? Geez - they called it a 2001 9 months before 2001 started! The whole model year thing with cars is really starting to **** me off.

In all reality, an aftermarket solution would have been 'acceptable' to me. I just didn't want the dealer to send it to some crappy stereo store to have some cheap door opener installed that would break in a week or two. This is why I originally told them that I wanted Ford parts.

In a conversation on Friday, I told my service manager that if he had called me before ripping the truck apart, we could have worked something out. His response was that they didn't know it would be such a big job until they were already in to it.

Given where we are now, I would love to just demand a new Screw. I just don't think I'd win. If this lasts for more than another few days, I will be speaking to the GM at the dealer because I NEED my truck next weekend. We'll see.

As it turned out, my dealer attempted the type fix you described, but realized early on the amount of work required. At that point they indicated they would not proceed because of the labor costs. This is where they got really slimy, because they admitted the truck did not have the equipment described to me, but were unwilling to correct it because 'technically' I owned the vehicle and they didn't have to be obligated.

I'll stop there....before my blood pressure goes off the scale as a result of re-living the ordeal.

What ever the solution, make sure a couple of these things are in order:

1 - the interior lights and the exterior bed light(rear of cab) should illuminate when the remote device unlocks the vehicle.
2 - the auto-lock function (which occurs when the vehicle is started) should be able to be dis-abled, using the deactivation sequence noted in the Owners manual.
3 - the remote device should operate in the same manner, whether the auto-lock function is disabled or not. (My after market solution does not allow me to de-activate the auto-lock function, and I'm not happy. I carry an extra key in my wallet in case of lock-out...and I've used it several times).

All of the above is extremely difficult to achieve with after-market equipment due to the electronics and wiring sequences necessary. Installing factory fob remote entry on a Gen I requires starting from zero, as you are finding out. BOL.

Thanks MrBill - that is excellent info. I will let you know how this thing turns out.

I'm holding on to my survey until this issue is closed.

Well...they actually did it! I picked up my truck yesterday. My dealer very successfully installed the FACTORY remote keyless system - complete with fobs, RAP module (with keycode) and door harness for adding the keypad later if I choose. They even washed and cleaned the whole truck for me. It looks great - no apparent damage, and so far no new rattles or squeaks.

I must say that I am impressed - and very pleased with my dealer. They went above and beyond in order to hold up their end of the deal. Based on the posts here, installing the factory system is not easy, and not done often (if ever). Even though it took a while, my service department is DEFINITELY going to get a good review on my survey!

I just thought I'd end this thread on a good note!

Happy S'crewing!

vt, i mean no disrespect, but, you remind me to much of myself. since i had the luxury of reading your post instead of living your ordeal, i'm calling it the way it is.

you got boned from day one. either the truck came without the wiring as it should have or your dealer was incompetent.

the trucks are prewired i bought the module over the counter and had it installed in a parking lot in 30 minutes.

if the truck didn't have the wiring, they should have raised the bull**** flag with ford and made them rectify the situation.

spit shining the truck doesn't make up for what you went through. think twice about that positive review. the way i see it, either which way the dealer did you no justice.
