Bed Extender Security
Just wanted to share this idea for protecting your bed extender....drill a hole through the bracket so that when the shackle is inserted, it prohibits the 'spring latch' from being depressed!

There were a few guys back a couple months ago who had done the same thing with theirs. It is a great deterrent for having the thing stolen!

Great idea! Can you swing it with the lock on? I'm not very mechanically inclined, how hard was it?

I'm sorry but I cannot figure out how this would work...I sat out there yesterday for three hours trying to figure it out. No where does it look large enough to drill a hole.
What "prong" of the extender is the lock on, the middle?

I installed a lock on each side, and yes, it swings over with the locks installed.
I believe I used a 5/16" bit, which was a hair larger than the 1/4" lock shackle.
Look closely at how the 'spring latch' moves, then mark the position for the 5/16" hole on each side of the bracket...so that when the holes are drilled and the shackle is inserted through and through, the 'spring latch' would be prevented from being depressed.

I want to get a Bed Extender but they are pretty pricey from the dealership. Is there any difference between one from ford and a after market one. If not where is a good place to get one.

Thanks for the great idea!
I saw your post the months ago and drilled my holes, (one is a little crooked, tight fit). My challenge was finding a padlock that would fit just right. I finally found a brushed silver Masterlock that fits tight up against the side of the truck, and I can still swing the extender in & out.

All the aftermarket xtenders I've seen are made by Steel Horse and are NOT the same as the Ford version. I bought one on the web for $199 after being told they were the same as Ford's by web site folks. When I discovered it was not (required adding hinges when SCREW already has mounting holes and was aluminum not stainless steel) I sent it back for a full refund. To their credit, the web site gave me a full refund and paid all shipping charges.
The Ford xtender is expensive UNLESS you get it with the truck ($195 MSRP, $166 invoice). As an add-on dealer MSRP is about $350. I have a friend who works at a Ford dealership and his price is about $275 (cost + 10%). I can't understand why it went from an MSRP of $195 to $350 and a dealer cost of $100 more, but that's the way it works, unfortunately.
BTW - I have seen Steel Horse version at local car/truck stores for $149.

Thanks for the information on the bed extender. I was wondering if you have had any luck with the radiator issue?

Well ladies and gentlemen just for the heck of it I tried to remove my bed extender with the tailgate closed and locked. And YES, the extender can be removed! It's a bit more difficult than with the gate down but it can be done.
Thanks FyrDawg for the tip! I'm gonna buy a couple locks and install them. Seems like cheap insurance compared to the cost of replacing a stolen bed extender.
