Exclamation

On my truck the extender can NOT be removed when the tailgate is locked, UNLESS the extender is upside down. It was upside down from the factory.

I respectfully digress. I tried mounting my xtender in all positions and it could be removed with the tailgate up no matter how it is mounted. I, too think that theft could be a real problem with these things, but I'm not real wild about the two padlock solution.
Oh well, it's the best idea I've seen so far.

Is anyone using the bed extender with a bed cover? I have not got the bed extender because it seemed like it would be a pain to use with my cover.

screwloaner,

did you lift that thang or crank the front torsion bars. i cranked mine 3 full turns then backed it down 1. like the look being closer to level.

SCrewLoaner, I use the extender with my Retrax and it fits fine - the extender is lower than the top of the bed, I can't imagine that most covers would get in the way.

This is what I'm gonna do. I had a better idea that the padlock, but it was the same premise. Use one of the trailer hitch locks, the come in a two pack for the ball ount and your trailer. The trailer one is small and will fit. The reason for doing this is that they are Bolt cutter proof and you only need to carry one key for both.

But, I don't wanna drill the holes. I'd "F" it up, so I'm gonna use the bike lock, I allready have one of those in stock.

Yes, the bed extenders CAN be removed with the tailgate closed and locked....thus the need for this 'mod'. As far as trailer hitch locks, I tried those first...along with just about every other locking device known to man. Then settled on the brass (more weatherproof) padlocks with the long shackle. I've been using it for some time, and it looks AND works great, plus peace of mind. Glad so many of you liked the idea.

Red face

I guess if I were a crook I would starve. I really thought my extender would not come out with the tailgate closed. I'm glad you guys corrected before some thief on the street did!

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the extender on the SuperCrew come with a weatherproof metal chain and lock? Mine did...

The lock and chain may be Ford's answer to the security problem. I didn't get any locking device when I bought my 'Crew just about one year ago....and it was this board where I, too, learned that they could be removed....thus the inception of the 'extender padlocks'.
Whatever works...as long as it stays in 'yer bed!
