Locked Out in BFE & Ford's Road Side Service
While out hunting this weekend a dumba$$ locked my truck with the keys hanging in the ignition. He opened the drivers side door and hit the lock button instead of unlock then closed the door. Here I am 15 miles from the nearest town locked out. I know, I should have reprogrammed my door auto-lock to stay unlocked and should have memorized or set the code on the key pad. So here we are, TWO dumba$$es looking for the Ford Roadside Assistance number on the outside of the truck - no where to be found. NOW I remember the keypad code and 1-800 number for Ford are in the glove box - in the LOCKED truck!!!!
I borrowed a cell phone and called home to my wife to get the 1-800 number from the truck file. I had to give directions to Ford's Roadside Service to be able to determine where we were and who could come unlock the truck. Finally a locksmith arrived to open the truck it took about 2 minutes. He stuck a plastic wedge between the glass and door just opposite the door lock push/pull button. Then he inserted a stiff wire with a hook, reached down and pulled up, unlocking the door. He had to drive 58 miles one way to reach me and said this would be the most expensive unlock charge he has done - $55. Can you believe it? His normal local charge was $25, so he got $30 for a two hour round trip drive. I just signed the invoice and thanked him.
Now I have changed the keypad code to one I won't forget and will remember to de-program the door auto-lock mode while out in the woods.
Thank God and two thumbs up for Ford Roadside assistance. This is a free service for 3 years or 36,000 miles. Don't forget about it - and use it if you need help.

We all have done this sort of thing before. A tip.... Attached to the yellow roadside assitance info card is a small decal with the 800 number on it that you can attach to one of your windows. Then if you lock your keys inside you can at least see the 800 number from outside the truck.

My dealer put a sticker on the inside of the fuel door with the Roadside Assistance number on it for such cases.

I have my $2 duplicate key that'll unlock the door only in my wallet right now. It's a cheap fix that'll save me some day. For the heck of it I tried starting the truck with this key. The starter just grinds but will not turn over.
Thanks guys for all the suggestions - all good ones. Believe me, I heard a few this weekend from some of the other hunters.
Leon - thanks, I didn't notice the decal.
2001screw4.6 - Fuel door idea is great place
Spare key is still a good one too. Thanks to all.

Here is what has saved me a few times. Have a spare 99 cent key made, hide (cable tie) it under the frame, it will open the door but will not run the truck. Hide your spare key in the cab. After opening the door with the cheap key you can drive off with your spare key

One option I love on the Lariat model..KEYPAD ENTRY on Drivers Door. I am famous for locking my keys in my trucks. NEVER AGAIN! (unless i forget my password)

Here's a good solution for this type of situation:
Get an auto locking key holder that can be mounted fron the inside with screws. The kind that has a pushbutton type locking mechanism on the front of it. Find a place to mount it to the underside of the truck out of the way and as far from the ground as you can get it. (make sure it is the waterproof version) Then all you have to do is rememver your code. It is more secure than the magnet mount or cable tied keys to the frame, and it does work really well. I was going to do it to mine, but I remember the keypad code to the truck, so I don't have to worry about it.
