Question Top 10 Screw defects?

I'm in the midst of negotiating for a new SuperCrew Lariat 4x4, and have been lurking on the message boards here for a few weeks, trying to soak up information. And you folks share a wealth of great data! I'd like to distill the main things to look for when taking delivery of a new S'crew, not only for myself, but for others in my same position.

My question: What would be the top ten defects to look for when taking delivery?

In no particular order, my partial list now includes:

1. Clunking transmission, when upshifting under power(fixed in 2001 models?)
2. Paint defects - thin paint from overbuffing or debris under paint.
3. Thin radiator on towing or off-road models
4. Door cracks - (shouldn't be apparent on a new truck; problem fixed for 2001?)

I'd appreciate any items you can add, or subtract, to/from the list. Thanks! And I'll keep enjoying the S'crew vicariously via the list, 'til I get my own to share.

Cheers,
Mike Lubrecht

If you are buying from the lot, don't let them sell you anything but a Gen III model (new seats w/ headrests). That is unless they knock the price down some more. If ordering, it should come that way.

LooScrew my Screw does not have the Clunking tranmission. From what I have been reading, that seems to be a problem with the 5.4 engines. The door cracks should be a SuperCab problem not with the Screw.

Thumbs up

So far after owning my SCrew for several days, I've had no problems yet.

1. I have had no clunking of the transmission in my SCrew so far. The only thing I noticed was a slight lag when going into reverse. The gears doesn't catch as quickly as my old Dodge Quadcab. Not sure if that's normal since my last Ford had a manual transmission.

2. As for paint defect, I had two very minor scratches that happened during transit on one of the rear doors. Dealer already have me scheduled to bring it in to have it touched up.

3. Standard radiator is what I have with the Off road and Tow package. There is another thread in regards to this. However, I've heard some people not having any issues towing with standard radiators. The bad part is that someone expects to have it because it's on the specs and then it arrives without one. I expect a HD radiator if it was on the specs. This would be my only major complaint so far.

4. Door cracks have been occuring on the S/C and older moldel SCrews I believe. There was a report on this stating that there was insuffecient support on the door, so during driving conditions they tend to bow in or out creating a crack. There is suppose to be a fix by adding support at the known weak spots. I'm sure someone has more accurate details about this.

I am one very happy SCrew owner and so far it has impressed me a lot. I thought I would miss my old Dodge, but after driving this monster it isn't so bad.

If you looking for light spray of paint top coat, this may only be apparent on light color trucks and then only in bright sunlight. Also, look for that missing cover on firewall behind battery.

1. Transmission rubbing and shudder.

2. Transmission failure.

3. New transmission rubbing and shudder.

4. Too much lumbar support in GenIII Captain's Chairs.

That's it. Can't come up with any more. If not for the tranny this would be an almost perfect truck. Ride and engine (5.4)are unbelievable -- as are the looks.

No SuperCrew nor Expedition (which shares the same door) has the "cracking" problem. The door design is totally different in the affected area.

FWIW, the "fix" has been released for the cracking reg and super cab doors.

Need to have some sort of splash shield in front of the front wheel well. I dont think its good on the factory fog lights. They also need factory splash guards when you get the factory running boards, they get full of dirt fast if you dont have something protecting them.

Hey guys,
-What about the mud/sand that comes out around the rear tail lights (for days) after playing in the mud. If you hold the hose underneath towards the lights, water will shoot out of them!
-minor debris painted over on tailgate
-tranny seems to engage slowly from R to D

Other than that, this is an awesome truck! I unintentionally got one wheel hanging in the air (over a ditch) while on 3 wheels with the front axle on the ground because some trespassers came down my one-way road, running me into the drainage pipe ditch. They stopped and couldn't believe that I put it in 4 low reverse and crawled right out! They were yelling and said they couldn't believe that I got out of the hole. They said, "you need to get out and see where you just got out of". Whoa, just a 3' drop-off, but hey, they were in a Chevy!!

Unhappy

The only mechanincal problem I have had so far is a sound coming from the heater core. When this sound first appeared I thought something was warong with the transmission as it would make this low gooshing sound right before the transmission would up-shift. The harder you were, the louder it was (althought not very loud at all). Until I could get it in, I discovered it only made this noise when the engine was warm & only between 2100 - 2300 rpm.

The dealer deiscovered it was the heater core. Their test was to clamp off 1 hose & the noise went away. This is a known problem & there is a Ford fix. They place a restircter in the inlet hose to the heater core. The only problem is now it still makes that noise, but now between 2500 - 2700 RPM. As I do not cruise at these rpm's, it is hardly noticable. As I rarely have the radio off, I really don't notice it.

The only other problems was a missing plastic cap that goes in behind the seat (& I wqish they made caps that cover the rear passanger seat belt mountings on the floor board).

The sound system cound be better, but I will take care of that later!

Well with 7000+ miles on mine (mostly highway - RT to Florida from NJ - the long way) I've been flawless till today. I was under the truck putting a lock on the spare when I noticed oil leaking from the front differential where the drive-shaft goes in.
I also like femseadoo also drove into an unseen drainage ditch - front tire rolled thru and hit bottom very slightly so I continued and the back rolled thru hitting a little harder- I thought "sh*t I got more clearance in the back what did I hit ?" so I got out and and looked . The shock mount on the drivers side hit JUST PERFECTLY on the top exposed edge of the 24" concrete drainage pipe.- (that I never saw) - AND BENT IT- DA#N!!
Also bizarre ,but the body torqued enough so the bed made contact with the cab on the passengers side making a very slight ding. - But you should see the ditch it took in stride!! Am I ever glad I got the 17" wheels AND the OFF ROAD Package-- Cuz Ya neva know.....

1. 5.4 Engine Knocks, especially on cold mornings and after 2 hour on interstate.
2. Engine Noisy in cab. I can hear the engine sound like it has headers. Also hear a chain rattling sound.
3. Trans/Drivetrain clunk on slow acceleration.
4. Incorrect radiator for class III Towing.

I have a 99 Expedition with the 5.4. It has been great. The Expedition 5.4 is so much quieter. My new Screw w/900 miles is very disappointing.
I have an appointment to address these concerns Thursday. If not satisfied, I'm dumping the truck. I've been all Ford for 30 years... Maybe its time for a change.
