Question ? about 5w-20 synthetic, not a debate.

Is anyone running a 5w-20 synthetic? If so, which brand?

I was on the Mobil 1 website reading about the advantages of synthetics and it has stirred my curiosity.

Thumbs up

I have run AMSOil 5-30 and 0-30 and liked both. I run the 5-30 full synthetic in my truck and the Series 2000 racing oil 0-30 in my wifes 98 SS Camaro. No problems with either. I did notice the engine was quieter after the synthetic oil change from the dino oil. It is amazing how easily these synthetics flow so if we were still up in New England, I bet there would be an advantage on cold starts in reducing wear.

Haven't pulled the heads on the Camaro to see if it really is still shiny under there as it is supposed to be!

Cooper,
I ran full synthetic in my previous vehicle (Don't know the weight) and I plan to use full synthetic in the SuperCrew when it is time for an oil change. I noticed better MPG and idle previously. I hope I can squeeze a little more MPG out of the SCrew. I live in FL and after reading the posts from other members about the scarcity of 5-20 and 5-30 oils on the shelf, I was surprised of the availabilty of those weights in every Wal-Mart/Auto store I go into.

While I can't vouch for this with any first hand knowledge, I have gotten advice on this from a couple of trusted sources and have seen numerous discussion in other forums.

What I got from those I trust is that you want the engine to "wear in" some during "break in" in order to have connections open up or tighten up as is natural for that connection. If the lubricant works too well, this doesn't happen or at least as fast, and thus the engine doesn't run as it ultimately should.

What I have seen debated is how long it takes. I have heard everything from 500 to 3500 miles. Almost everyone agrees its OK during first dino oil change. My truck got it after 5000 miles. The SS came with synthetic (go figure). Neither have any issues that I can detect.

Good luck,

Chuck

I changed my oil at 2,700 miles and put in Amsoil. I've noticed a quicker start up in cold weather, and I've had no probs...It's probably the best synthetic oil on the market, and I don't work for them. Get the 5-30 oil.

Re: 5W20 oil
this subject has been bothering me for a while and finally got a satisfactory answer from a very reliable mechanic, who specializes in hightech motors. He recommended to use regular 5W20 (available at Wallmarts)for the first 5000 to 7000 miles and then, if one wishes, switch to the synthetic oil. He, however, strongly recommended that you go to your Ford dealer and have him sign (document prepared by you), that it would be OK to switch to 5W30 synthetic without harming the warranty - he streesed this several times.
I have searched every available avenue for 5W20 synthetic, but to no avail.
Had my first oil change yesterday (3000 miles)and refilled it with regular 5W20.

Use 5W-20 regular oil until a synthetic of the same weight comes out. Come on people, quit blowing this out of proportion. I too am a strong believer and user of synthetic oils, but it's not like your truck is going to explode if you can't get synthetic in it right away. 5W20 is becoming a standard. Honda has been using for it for 3 years already. The 5W-20 synthetics will come. Be patient.

Question

Faithful,
Did someone recommend to you the 5w-30 Amsoil synthetic in replace of the 5w-20? I ask because I called Amsoil and their tech. support recommended 0w-30. Also, what filter are you using?
Thanks

Re: put the burdon on the dealer.
My screw will be going back to the dealer
for its first oil change, which is a freeby from the dealer. They want it back at 3,000 miles. Fine. I was at the parts counter moaning about the wrong radiator problems, when I noticed a oil display on the shelf to the right. One of them is 5w-30 full synthetic. So I figure, if I can have the dealer install the synthetic on the 6,000
mile oil change,- I want more miles on it before the change- I get my synthetic, and he
gets more $$ for installing it, and also most importantly, I get a receipt showing who installed 5-30 when Ford specs 5-20.
Will they do it? I'll let you know.

Cooper,

Amsoil recommended 5w-30 to me. As you know, they don't have 5w-20. But I wouldn't go lower than 5w-20. That is what Ford is recommending.
