So called fog lights
Now i'm not claiming to be the brightest bulb on the tree, but when I'm driving in fog or a blizzard, the whole reason I want fog lights is because the headlights are mounted to high on the front, and the fog lights are mounted low so as to illuminate the road and not reflect the light off the fog or snow back into my eyes. Having said that why in God's name would a Ford "Engineer" have it set up that the only way you could turn on the fog lights is to turn on the headlights first?? Remember Choo- Choo Charlie was an engineer!!

Screwking,
I feel your pain! Here's what I did.
(1.)I looked up a post here on modifying
the fog/headlight switch.The post was put out by fed-x-pilot.Excellent job on his part for the dieection's.All the instruction's & picture's you'll ever need.This enable's you to use the fog's with parkinglight's,headlight's & brite's.
Work's great. It's a little scary cutting into a new truck, but once your into it it's easy.Check it out.
(2.)I replaced my 42 watt foglight's with #9005 light's which are 65 watt high beam bulb's for a four lamp system. Some people that have done this mod. have had a direct replacement fit while other's have had to make minor modification's to the bulb or the retainer ring that hold's it in.I had to take off my retainer ring & put the bulb in & screw the ring back over it . Work's great though.
Bottom line both are cheap modification's
and you get a nicer fog light system out of it.Although in general Ford still could have done a much better fog light system design.
I had a 1999 Explorer that had round fog's in it & the were just incredible.Right from the factory I might add.
happy trail's

Go grab yourself a pair of 9005 bulbs (65W) and replace the driving lamp bulbs that are in there now with them.
I did not have to modify and tabs or flanges on my SuperCrew...they just fit like a glove and took 2 minutes to install both of them!
What a "BIG" difference it made in the lighting and for just a few dollars.
For those of you who are looking for more light out of the Ford driving lamps.....go grab yourself a pair of 9005 bulbs and stick them in, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

Just a question: With the increased wattage of the new bulbs, is there a danger to overheat the assembly? I did the fog light mod and use them each day. Great mod and want to hear anyone's thoughts on a possible heat problem, if any.

Hey, riddle me this....driving around I have noticed everyone using their foglights....without the fog. Planning to put the 65 watters in the round lights on our H-D SCrew.
In the meantime, I've got a set of 100 watt Hellas on my Toyota pickup. Excellent lights with great cut off on the left....brightens the road and doesn't blind oncoming drivers.

First of all why are people calling these fog lamps...these are driving lamps!!!
Fog lamps are those ugly looking yellow things that people turn on when it is a clear night out to **** me off. The mods we are doing with the 9005 bulbs are to me considered lower driving lights and will in no way hurt you vehicle because you have increased the outage to 65W. sure the plastic may get warm...but nothing out of norm.

Hey Screwdriver 2001.....
We are talking about the lower lights that are located below the front bumper.
Throw a set of 9005 bulbs in those babies and you won't believe the difference it makes....you will wonder how you ever lasted this long with those low powered stock bulbs from Ford!
The world is yours!!!

Just to defend engineers, I wouldnt be suprised if teh design engineers would do it your way, but they dont get to pick how the vehicle is finaly built. There are many people that have a higher say so than the engineers. The ford design engineers wanted the first explores to be alittle wider and a little lower, only after ford got bad PR and sued did they change the design.
Check out this website:

Lots of good info on lighting, bulbs and such...like don't spend your money on PIAA jumk. It's pretty esoteric but again, we're talking engineers here.
Enjoy.....Rube
