BuffBakerGA,

Check the Appearance Products forum. There is a thread going there about how to justify mods to one's significant other; might prove useful to you in the future!

I went from a 1997 Expedition to a new SuperCrew this past spring. I also have a 1989 Grand Marque I used to commute to work so I didn't have to drive the Expedition. Since I got my SuperCrew, in June, I have only driven the G.M. 9 times. I really love driving the SC. It's a hell of a vehicle. I'm the opposite of most of you. My kids are grown and mostly gone, but I use the back seat for the grandkinds, and the mother-in-law. I went from a full size extended cab F-150 with an eight foot box and a cap, to the Screw. I've hauled almost as much in the Screw as I was ever able to get in the old truck, (except for maybe 8' sheets of drywall) my gas mileage is much better, it tows better, it's just all around one of the best choices out there! So this can also replace other trucks, not just SUV. I love my Screw...

We've owned 3 suv, all Explorers' 91E.B., 93XLt,and a 95E.B. With the Supercrew you have to comfort of an suv and now have a bed to haul your stuff. What more could ask for?
Have no negatives on it, just plus'

We also have a Toyota 4-Runner. We no longer take the 4-Runner on trips since the Super Crew is much more comfortable and drives better. Plus with an infant and all the associated paraphenalia (toys, porta-crib, bath tub, etc.) and two dogs (105 lbs and 65 lbs), the Super Crew is the only way to travel. It is also great for loading up on the mulch or carrying the 12 hp rear tine tiller beast.

The only drawback is the bigger turning radius - we have a longer wheel base than the Excursion!

Had a 95 Tahoe 2DR FWD. Headers, chip, exhaust, A co-worker purchased a S-CREW Saw it and it was all over, Got Mine in Dec. And love so far. This is my first Ford (except for hand me downs). I am really impressed with the ride, power and quality. The only thing I even remotely miss about my SUV is the turning radius. My bed cover really came in handy on the holidays hauling presents. The Grand Kids enjoyed a movie on the way home. There is no comparision to full size rear seat and rear doors. I think it is a wise Choice!!!!!

Question

From the 2001 Commercial Vehicles brochure:

Wheel Base:
Screw: 139.0
Excursion: 137.1

Length Over All:
Screw: 226.2
Excursion: 226.7

The WB on the Screw is 1.9" longer than the Excursion. The Excursion is 0.5" longer overall than the Screw.

With somethings 2" is a lot but on something this big I don't think it really matters.

i sold my 99 4Runner and got a 01 Super Crew in Deep Wedge Blue XLT 5.4 4WD, and really pleased with it's functionality. the only thing i'm still getting used to is gas mileage but other than that, great truck! have had it for 2 weeks now. i've got 2 kids so they fit well in the back, really don't need a big bed, just enough for yard stuff, mulch, etc.

buffbaker,

I'm the same height as your wife. I've driven everything from a 97 F150 reg cab, 97 & 98 F150 supercab, 93 & 2000 F350 crewcab dually, 68 & 93 mustang, 2000 expedition, 94 tempo, 85 F250 supercab diesel 4X4, 89(?) olds eldorado, 2 early 90 model taurus's, 78 t-bird, late 70's blown camaro to a 79 bonneville. All I can say is "the bigger the truck the better"! I've never driven a supercrew (yet) but I love driving the crew cab 1 ton trucks. I think our expedition kicks ***. I think my f150 kicks ***. And the f350 most definently kicks ***.
They are not monsters. I feel safer in our trucks and SUV then I do in our cars. The height and the roomy interiors are great. And the handling is even better. I love my f150 b/c it handles great and so easy to drive.
like I said before - I'm barely 5'2" and if I was told that our 93 F350 crew cab dually diesel would be the only vehicle I would get to drive for the rest of my life then I would be excited - the bigger the better.

I'm graduating college in May and I bet my parents get me a SuperCrew for a grad gift.

Buff, I'm kind of like anteater but no grand kids. I had a 97 f150 4.6 that I loved, but needed more room. We travel a bit. I also tow a boat and thinking of a camper. I got the Screw in August, its a 5.4 4x4 Lariat and I like it better than the X-cab. Lost a little in mileage but its as comfortable and we have room to spare.

Cool

Well I was going to trade in a 97 Jeep grand Cherokee LTD on my 01 screw, but the dealer would not give me a decent deal for trade. As my wife really likes the Jeep, we decided to keep it.

The screw XLT is not as "luxerious" as the GC, but then again it is a truck! I did not go for the Lariat as I do not need what the Lariat offered over the XLT.

It is definatly larger then the GC & takes some getting used to parking. The way the hood & bed curve, it can be a little hard telling just how close you are to other cars or objects.

This is not my first truck as I had owned a 88 GMC short bed (POS!), a 77 Blazer with a 4" lift & oversized tires (great vehicle) and a Subaru Brat (if you call that a truck).

With a 13mo old, I can not fold down the rear seat in the GC. Also there is just not enough room in the back for our Alaskan Malamute.

I went with the screw because it has plenty of room in the back seat (being over 6', this is a must!).

I am not going to be doing much in heavy work, just hauling lumber, sod, pavers & other home improvements as well as the dog, skis & my son.

I will be getting a bed extender (best price I found so far is $159 + $13 shipping), BedRug ($288 + $17 shipping) & am looking for a good bed cap. The bed extender should do a good job of keeping the groceries from sliding around (just leave the dog at home!).

I also have seen a good bed extender that attaches in the hitch & doubles the length of the gate being down (like for hauling long boards).

Had the screw for 3 weeks, so far so good!
