My manual says 5W-20 also. Called Service Mgr. She says they use only Motorcraft 10W-30 and would not recommend 5W-20, too thin for this climate. After I told her people on this board are saying the same thing, she said she will call Ford technical, which only dealers can do and look into it.

Question

build date 10-8 and 5w-20 suggested in owner's manual. I find it hard to believe there could confusion by ford on such a basic and critical issue. In fla, do you suggest 5-30?

I have confirmed what Gorgecrew and Johnsc said earlier. The service manager found a new TSB that they just got two weeks ago. It states Ford recommends 5W-20 in all gas engines for 2001, excluding only a few. Reason being Ford states you will save $ in fuel economy, about .6 percent, as well as increased engine life.

Anyhow, it was news to my dealer. They did not have 5W-20 in stock, but ordered it. At first, they didn't believe me, so I told them people on this board were talking about 5W-20. It goes to show you the power of this board.

Next thing you know they will be wanting us to use diesel fuel for oil....how thin is Ford going to take this!!!!!

Question

Where can I find the actual build date of the engine? Is there a place to find Ford directives online?

Thanks,

Rick

Just had my oil changed for the second time and the dealer used 5w-30. Asked about the 5w-20, but they had not heard about the change. I went to a Lincoln dealer, but assume the Navigators will use 5w-20 as well for 2001? Guess I will stick with the 30.

Mine was built 5/00. Manual says 5w30. Cap says 'Engine Oil'. Oil change last month at the dealer, they used 5w30.

Hmmm, I wonder if the 5w20 is how they're getting the extra HP out of the 4.6? Naw, I'll keep using the 5w30.

What the ******* is going on here? I got mine today and oil cap says 5w20 and manual says 5w20 and then someone says 5w30? Sounds like big time confusion for everbody. Someone needs to check this (c)hit out before someone gets hurt really bad. I'm fixing to buy a camper and don't want to burn up "DA WHITEBOY" Later and waiting for a reply from someone in the know besides what I found out today-Late-BD

Picked up my SuperCrew on 10/13 and it also calls for 5-20 in the manual and on the filler cap also.

Sounds like Ford made a change in the oil type in the middle of the year...I would stick with what the owners manual and the filler cap says..They wrote the book and should know (those are strong words) what they are doing. They must of learned something after the middle of the year...

Without getting technical the 5.4L engines in Ford trucks built after July require 5W20 oil. The owners manuals and engine stickers will indicate this for your particular S-Crew. Using anything else could technically void your warranty. Check with your local Ford Service manager showing them your owners manual and engine stickers if there is any doubt.

Ford and their engineers spent millions on R&D. They go to school for year to understand the details of lubrication and bearings. They spend thousands of hours running engines on dynos with various combinations of oils.

For Gods sake why would YOU think you know more about the best oil for your Ford and not FORD? What about their torque suggestions for the block? Are you going to change those too? Maybe the allignment specs could use some tweaking also. Anyone have any suggestions there?

Put exactly what the manual says NOT what the dealer says verbally. If you have trouble the dealer will deny saying he told you to use anything except what the manual says. Dont let his stupidity effect your warranty.

In the event you did not know most Nascar teams use a oil that is about equal to 0w-5.
