Screw Off Road Package
I've been reading this message board for quite some time now, and finally got around to ordering a SCrew on 10/18/00. Thanks for all the info and pics. While placing the order, I learned that Ford no longer allows you to order the 17" wheels & tires (at least on the XLT model) alone. It is now part of an Off Road Package (55R) that includes the 17" wheels & tires, Off Road 4X4 decals, 3 skid plates, and heavy duty shocks. I tried to order it with just the wheels, tires, and skid plates. I had to pay the extra amount for the shocks and decals (the decals may come off depending upon how they look when it comes in). Just thought somebody might want to know this information. Oh yeah, the Class III Trailer Towing Package also includes heavy duty shocks and there wasn't a credit when I ordered both packages! Oh well.

I just got my first peek at my new truck tonight through the window of the dealership detailing bay! WOW! When I came home from hunting I got the message it was in, but they had already closed for the evening. I drove by to take a peek, and was surprised to see it has the 17" aluminum wheels that have been on the F-150s for the last few years with the off-road package! I'm not quite sure what to think...lol. It's not that I don't like them, it's just that they're not what I expected.
Again, a little information on the changes in packaging for those who are ordering trucks. Also, it has the rear seat headrests. This surprise was a bit more welcome! It'll be interesting to see if they've changed anything else when I get to touch it for the first time on Monday!

I too noticed the off road package change, and WOW, it's not cheap! You folks who already have the 17" wheels on a XLT, have got a bargain.
Illinois SCrew, I think you may have set a record for getting your truck the quickest. From ordering, to dealership in less than a month is amazing. I will be ordering one in Dec. or Jan. What dealership did you use? I live in Chicagoland.

Bill:
I ordered mine from a small dealership in Byron Illinois (12 miles south of Rockford, where I live) called, Bemis Motors. I basically "bought" the truck over the phone. I just called and spoke to my salesman, Leo, and told him what I wanted, and that I was willing to pay $100.00 over dealer invoice. He called me back a short time later (same day) and said he could do it, and we compared prices. Would you believe they matched?!
I went in the following day and went over everything and put a $500.00 deposit down. Yesterday (Saturday) I went in and picked it up! I shot a deer early in the morning, left my hunting partner out there, and returned home so I could go get it...lol. I picked my partner up later...lol, in the old truck!
Anyway, I know it's a little drive to Byron from Tinley Park, but if you don't have any luck closer to home, you may want to give him a call.
Since you said you're thinking about the off-road package I thought I'd mention...I knew my wife would NEVER! go for me buying new wheels and tires any time in the near future...lol, so I "settled" for the off-road package instead. If you're thinking about getting new wheels and tires, you might just try getting the skid plates with 16" tires and wheels. If you lift the truck you'll need new shocks anyway, so the shocks in the package will be of no use.
I'm not sure if it's because of the off-road package, or if they've done something to the front suspension, but mine doesn't seem to be as low in the front as those I've seen before. The rear is definitely just as high as before! I guess I've gone on long enough, but I could talk all day about these trucks! You won't be sorry you got one!

Illinois,
Thanks a million for the info. I printed a copy of your post for my future reference. If the local dealerships don't work out, I will not hesitate to buy from Bemis Motors, I don't mind the drive.
I saw a black Screw with the off road package on a dealer lot tonight. It was sharp,...didn't like the decal though.

Roger That On the 'New' Options List
I ordered by 4X4 SCrew 07/23/2000 with 17" Wheels, Skid Plates, Class III Tow/Trailer (which includes the heavy duty Shocks). The 4X4 Decal was standard. OK, so I go to pick it up last friday and guess what?? Everything is as ordered except for my 17" wheels and offroad tires. WHY ?? Because this new Offroad package (that didn't exist when I ordered my SCrew) wasn't ordered. Apparently production couldn't figure out for themselves that I ordered all of the options (separately) that are in their ORP (except for the damn decal which was not an individual item at the time) and so I got the 16" wheels/tires. Well, I was so happy just to see the new style back seats and console in the rig and had read enough posts about the lack of tire choices with the 17" wheels that (after they deducted the price of the wheel upgrade, $340.00) I decided to overlook the error and take her home without a squable. Anyway, it's an awesome truck and the three kids + wife all fit with room to spare.

I was told the only thing missing from my truck when ordered was the "off road" sticker. I know now that must have been a joke! Or does Ford really think that those Wrangler RT/S tires are "all terrain"?

What are the particulars on those heavy duty shocks? I've got 'em and they seem to work well but what's different about them? Are they gas and who builds 'em?
I've got the 4x4 package w/plates and now I just need to go hunting and enjoy having 4 drive wheels.
I've had the truck a week and I can't stop grinning. Neighbors are all jealous.

Just got a call from my wife that the new SCrew arrived at the dealer today. As you can see in my signature I ordered 17" 10 Spoke wheels, skids, etc. As I was halfway expecting based on DesertDog's post my truck arrived exactly as I ordered it with the exception of the standard 16" wheels and tires instead of the 17" 10 spokes that I ordered.
The dealer has filed a claim with Ford to get me the correct wheels, I'll be interested to see how quickly/easily they can get them for me. Maybe I'll get lucky and I can pick the tires I want to put on them instead of the Goodyear RT/S that everyone is complaining about.

Wickman,
Are your tires smaller than 265? Say 255 or 245 maybe? That might make a difference in your speedometer reading , etc., when it comes to changing the wheels & tires. Just wondering.

1IllinoisScrew,
Yes, the tires currently on the truck are the General Grabber P255/70R16's. They were supposed to be the P265/70R17's. I also thought about the speedo issue yesterday as well as making sure the spare tire is also replaced.
I wish Ford gave me a choice rather than assuming that sice they didn't have the 10 spoke wheels that I wanted the crappy base model wheels. They just don't look right on a 4x4. At least the dealer seems committed to making it right.
