4x2 Supercrew, 4.6L or 5.4L???
I have a Supercrew 4x4 (4.6L)....I Pull a 20' ski boat in the summer and a 4 place snowmobile trailer in the winter. The 4.6L has never let me down and does everything I need it to do...if your towing any bigger than this, buy yourself a Superduty 3/4 ton!
I bought this truck off the lot because of the options on it and no waiting time...the 4.6L triton is one hell of a good performing motor...even though it has a few smaller numbers (hp/torque)than the 5.4L I really don't care...this smaller V8 rocks hard!

the 5.4 is a fine engine, and the 4.6 is also,,,,niether one has a great reputation for gas milage ratings, but as you can imagine the 5.4 is going to be a bit worse than the smaller 4.6. you will only recognize a difference in low end torqe created by the 5.4 liter. once underway they both perform
as you would expect. gas milage is not an area the supercrews can brag about.. with that said,, its the hottest truck built today.

IMHO, unless you drive an extreme amount of miles, get the 5.4. I am told the 4.6 has a different/smaller transmission as well. (Not sure?)
Didn't matter, I went with the 5.4 and get 14 MPG in "pain in the butt" city traffic.
A buddy of mine has the 4.6 in his pickup. He does not haul much, but has not complaint.
They are both good motors.
Congrats on your decision. I love mine!

I also live in the Houston area. I have had my SCrew since late June and love it. I have the 5.4 in it and get +-16 mpg city and hwy driving. As far as the 4.6 I can not say anything about it. But the 5.4 is great for towing and the power is there for passing. Also when ever you go to sell your SCrew you will have extra $$$ for the 5.4.
If you don't have a dealer that you trust e-mail me and I'll get you in touch with my guy. I paid $100 over invoice on an order and could have gotten one off the lot at $500 over invoice.

Thx for the point on the tranny. Will follow up on that one. Anyone know if the 4.6 tranny is different the the 5.4?

I may contact you for your sales rep. I've got a rep who the company I work for orders 30+ vehicles a year from (cars and trucks). Now I've got target to shoot for. Was expecting invoice +$250 on an order. Pulling the trigger before Thanksgiving.
Anybody have any other thoughts/concerns/experiences on the 4.6/5.4 issue? THX!

Looking for some help.
I'm getting ready to order a 2001 Supercrew 4x2 (Lariat)and have some questions on the 4.6L vs 5.4L. Yes, I've looked at the posts on the "engine" board, but from what I've seen in the mags/brochures/etc. the "newer" engines have different HP/torque/etc than some of the older models. My biggest question is mileage. Does anyone have any "real life" mileage experiance with the "newer" engines in the SCrews? If its really 1-2 MPG different between the two, the 5.4 is a no brainer.
I plan to use the truck primarily as a "commuter" vehicle - hauling the kids around, drive to work, road trips, etc.
Very little towing. Got a trailer full of 4wheelers (2500#), dad has a 19' bay boat (4500#). Maybe get a pop-up camper (4500#). I live in Texas (Houston), so most of my driving is on flat, rolling terrain. Don't get out of Texas much with so much to see and do here.
Driven both 4.6 and 5.4 and really noticed very little difference. The 4.6 runs pretty stong, though I'm sure I would see a difference pulling a trailer/under heave load.
Plan to keep it 6-7 years, so "resale" is not really an issue to me. (Currently driving a 92 Pathfinder 4x2 - I need a "REAL" truck now...)
Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I'm itching to get it on order and this is the only issue I've got outstanding...

StrongWind,
I test drove both the 5.4 and the 4.6 (220 hp version). There is a difference but once you buy it and use it everyday you will forget all about it. I have not been disappointed with the 4.6 since I got it. Even passing is not a problem when going 55. The only issue that took some getting used to was how often it shifted out of OD when at highway speeds. This happens when going up slight inclines for example. I have also heard of this happening with the 5.4s as well. This appears to not be an issue of engine size as much as it is an issue of shift points. The transmission is designed to keep the engine revs low for smooth, quiet highway cruising.
Highway mileage is good for a truck (20+ MPG) but city mileage is highly dependent on driver habits (11-14 MPG).
I'm sure you'll be happy with either engine. So much emphasis is put on the engine and mileage with these trucks. Neither is their stong points. These are well built, smooth riding, highly versatile utility vehicles regardless of options. Everytime I get to spend some time with this truck I walk away smiling.
Good Luck!

Just got back from a 1200 mile round trip ...California to Lake Powell, Utah with my fully loaded screw + 3 passengers (4.6L) and fully loaded 18' ski boat.
What a comfortable ride! I didn't even check the mileage figures (oops!) but had no complaints about the 4.6L performance.

I asked a similar question before buying mine. The bottom line was best summed up in a quote someone sent me.
"There's no substitute for cubes". When it comes down to it, if you ever think you are going to need the extra bit of horsepower, get it now.

Thanks for the info.
Screwit - Thanks for the HP/Torque numbers. Confirm what I found in other Ford info. I believe the numbers for the current 4.6L are not comparable with the 4.6 you had in your 97. And if I'm not mistaken, when the 5.4 came out it was rated at 235 HP/300 ftlb +/-. Similar numbers to the 4.6 has today. And I won't argue the bigger motor is better for towing, but I don't think I'll be running the truck loaded/towing more than 10% of the time. And if I was getting 4WD I would probably consider the extra HP/ftlbs from the 5.4.
2001 - By chance, have you calculated actual mileage lately?
Anyone seen any "stats" in the auto rags for 0-60mph/ quarter mile? HP/Torque curves?
It's like everyone has pointed out, there is really nothing "bad" about either engine. Both are good, strong performers.

StrongWind...I am not a person that bothers with gas mileage statistics. Especially when it comes to Ford Trucks/Supercrews...they are not a truck to buy if your picky about gas mileage...well built, comfort, price and great looks is what I look at in buying a truck.
Although I know I get 500-550km out of each tank driven normally, which is not bad considering the weight of these trucks.
I really like the Big bang for the buck you get out of the 4.6L...it is really amazing how this smaller V8 performs.
Triton motor's are a great power plant!

I would pick the 5.4L. I had 4.6L in my 97 sc 4x4 lariat. If I was not towing it was great but put more than a jet ski on the back and you'll have no joy passing or going up grades. And I get better MPG with the 5.4L ??? I pull a 4000 LB malibu ski boat, the 5.4L is still not as strong as I would like but a lot better than a 4.6.
The 5.4L has 60 foot pounds of extra torque at 1000 rpms less than the 4.6L thats the real diff. HP is not as important as torque in trucks. More torque less RPM's = less rev's to get and keep the truck moving.

screwit...that's really funny because I have a 4.6L in my 2001 Supercrew 4x4 and I pull a 20' Mastercraft ski boat in the summer and a loaded four place snowmobile trailer in the winter with no problems at all. Sure it doesn't do 100mph up the hills pulling these loads, but the speed limit here is 70mph and I have "no problem" keeping it up around 70/75...out of overdrive of course!
This smaller V8 (4.6L) has really surprised me and ner misses a beat...big things come in smaller packages!
Who needs a ticket!
