My 97 was 220 HP and 290 ft lb factory spec. But it had all the mod's to. My friend has a 2000 4x2 and the same boat as me, up the grades neck and neck (foot to the floor 65mph) . I did not like the fact that it like to down shift and rev 4000+ rpm's same as my friends did, we also got the same mpg's. So I bought the 2001 SCrew with the 5.4L now my friend can't keep up on the grades, and it rev's much lower plus the bottom end power is a lot better and I get better mpg's ??? to boot. My friend is now shoping for a new 5.4L 4x4.
So the way I look at it on these truck's if you can get the 5.4L get it + - 1 mpg is not going to make a diff. And the fact that it rev's 1000 or more rpm's lower on a hot day might make it last a little longer?

p.s. the 97 specs.

5.4L 235 HP 330 ftlb @ 3000 rpm

4.6L 220 HP 290 ftlb @ 3250 rpm
