Lightbulb Bed Extender...a help or hindrance?

I was at a home improvement store the other day, some guy was loading a big box into the back of his SuperCrew. He couldn't get it past the bed extender. He had to remove the extender, place it on the ground, load the box, and then re-install the extender. I would imagine when he got home, he would have to do it all over again.

I had planned to get that option when I place my order...now I don't think so. It's a cool item to show the friends and family, but how practical is it? What do you think?

Sometimes it is, and sometimes it isn't. But IMO it is better to have and not need than need and not have.

When we go camping I take it out so I can put more stuff in the back and the bed does not need to be extended.

When we go riding and I need to put a few extra bikes in the bed I extend the bed so I can get them in.

Most of the time mine is out.

Bill:
How often is that going to happen? It's a great item and would not go without it..You got to think about what your going to get at the center before you leave the house...If its going to be a big item, then take it off at home....

It takes all of twenty seconds to remove/reinstall the extender. In the month I've had my SCrew I've used it twice---once to haul a twin mattress flat in the bed, and once to haul a good load of 2x4s and 4x4s. I love it.

I choose not to get the bed extender. My useage is pretty frequently backing up to a loading dock at my warehouse and loading drums of grease, oil, supplies. I don't want to be lifting a drum of grease over the bed extender.

I realize it is easy to remove, but for my usage it simply did not make sense.

However, I think they look pretty cool, and if you will drive with the gate down and the extender in place, your gas mileage will be considerably better on long trips.

I like it, but mine's not a work truck.

I've found that with small loads when I don't have the extender extended, I can place the materials inside the small area created between the gate and the bed extender to hold them in place.

Plus, everytime I've used it, other guys can't help but gawk, ask me about it and wish they had a s-crew instead of the SUV their wives made them buy. At least that's what I think.

Thanks for all your input. Most of you like your extender, and the cost is very reasonable. I will put it back on my want list of options.

By the way, I see that a lot of folks don't have a digital camera (neither do I), but the local photo shops will take your regular film and give you digitized pictures on floppy if you ask. No need to buy a new camera.

It is more trouble (and causes damage)then it is worth. To small of an area for Golf Clubs to fit in. If hualing anything large it must be pulled out. I actually had to cram it in the cab once to get a mid sized toolbox in! Mine is sitting in the garage gathering dust. The one time I used it I got tailgate rock chips. Looks cool but not very practical. Save the $$$

I ordered my SCrew with the extender for exactly what it has turned out most useful for. It holds my golf stuff securely against the gate.

I agree with digodell that your bag might be too big (especially if you have a staff bag). My carry bag fits fine. The driver does have to fit in the rails of the extender. (I have a hard lid to protect from theft).

I plan on building a box in the shape of the enclosed area. It will raise my bag off the bed and have storage for *****, shoes, windshirts, etc...

The couple of times I needed to carry large bulky items, I removed the extender before leaving the house. I agree, 20 sec. at the most.

The extender is also good for tailgate parties since it can hold a half keg of beer standing straight up perfectly. No rolling around in the back at every stop from the beer house to the party destination......

Yehhhh!!!!
