Question Wandering SCrew

My SCrew (4x4) tends to wander while driving down the road, I have adjusted air pressure up and down to try to cure this problem.Dealer re-aligned front end the first time and adjusted the toe-in some more during my last oil change. Still tends to wander from side to side of the road. Has anyone else noticed this issue with their SCrew, 2 or 4 wd ?

What did the dealer say about your "adjusted torsions?" How much have the been adjusted? Just wondering. I also cranked mine a little and have not seen any ill affects. Keep us posted - that is a mod I planned when, if, my Crew ever gets here!

I find the same problem on my 4x2. Steering feels very light at highway speed. Small surface irregularities cause it to pitch. Handles much better while pulling the trailer with the trailer bars transferring weight(600-800#) to the front suspension.

Adjusting the torsion does change the camber/caster.

The crappy Goodyears could also add to the problem. Got rid of mine at 300 miles. I noticed an instant improvement in handeling with my BFGs.

Whats with the 'ORP' in your sig?

I have noticed that my SCrew wanders and requires a little more attention while driving than my '97 F150 Super Cab did. I only have 600 miles on mine, and thought that maybe after the tires wore a little bit, it might calm down. I have also tried different air pressures, but it didn't really help. Mine is not too bad, and I'm noticing it less as I get used to it.

when i first received my super crew from the dealer i noticed the wander while on the expressway. it was like being on skates.. i thought it was normal...i was a car guy for years prior to getting my crew.. i checked tire pressure... i found 45 psi all around... i lowered it to 35 all around and now have 3000 miles on the goodyears (yuk) and it has significantly reduced the wander.. when the tires heat up it will wander some... replacing the goodyears is the long term solution...

Thanks for the replies.I have heard a few people complain about the GoodYear tires wandering.Seems they were all on Fords too.
Ford technician also told me that the truck steering ratio was changed and it is a sportier feel and so just a little turn of the wheel does more than it used too.
The adjusted torsions were compensated with alignment.I adjusted to where the truck sits as level as can be done with the torsions. Measured each side of the front and rear and adjusted to as close as i could get it .(use an 18MM socket).
I don't see much difference when towing our boat ( 3200 lbs.). If tires will correct the problem, then I may go for that fix. I can't get comfortable fighting the wheel all the time.
Thanks again. I appreciate it. John

ORP stood for Off Road Package.

Riotrob, you are correct in regards to ORP. At the time of my order (1/00), dealers didn't have any specs or numbers on available options. So we covered ourselves by using ORP as a catchall. I ended up finding all the specs on a military employee web and forwarding those numbers to the dealer for ordering info.Truck was delivered to my front door in 7 weeks with a full tank of gas, an attractive blonde delivery lady, and 101 miles (98 to my ranch). And that was over 8100 miles ago.
Anyway, appears to be a tire problem to me. Not the best time to be pricing new rubber! I will keep posted on final solution.
Thanks for all the replies. Great people and site.

I guess I am glad that I got my OWL all season tires now. no wandering for me. Rides better than my GMC did, and handles like my Car does. All, in all, I am very favorable for my Screw.

Hey all,

If you get a resolution, PLEASE post it. My screw doesn't really wander, it just flat out turns right! I've had it back to the dealer twice for an alignment and they freely admit that it pulls right, but that it's as good as they can get it.

The strange thing is that it doesn't wander left at all, it only pulls right.

I'm going to push for new tires and see what they say.

Anyone have tire recommendations?

Question

Wingnut,
I have a 97 Mercury Mountaineer AWD V8. When I drove it home the thing would drive in circles to the right if I didn't hold it back. I brought it back three times and it still wasn't right. The fourth time I met with the owner and he drove with me and observed the same and assured me he would fix it.

Result:
Fixed. The truck was brought to a frame shop that specializes in alignments. They said Ford puts them together with a non adjustable block. Setting the camber (I think) in a fixed position only allowing for a toe adjustment? One way or another something was non-adjustable, toe or camber. They removed the block and replaced it with a cam for adjustment. Two more trips to the shop and it was finally perfect.
Screws might be the same or might not. Let me know. Good luck

Future Mods. ARE LSII in silver or white, Brush guard, Spray on liner.....Rhino or Line-X

I contacted GoodYear and made a complaint about the 17" RT/S tires wandering. They gave me a file # and directed me to an authorized GoodYear dealer, which in this case is Sears as it is closest. I am heading there end of the week to have tires checked. I also have a co-worker who put Wrangler RT/S on his Surburban and it wanders all over the road too. So it is definitely the tires. Will keep posted on results. Suggest anyone who is having a prob contact the GoodYear # on your warranty papers. They will give a file # and you need that to receive any type of repair/replacement.
