Thumbs up

I have the Goodyear 17" 10 spoke rims and have no problems at all (6000 kms).

I will be keeping an eye open for any problems though!

Latest on the GoodYear tire issue. First, only a "GoodYear Store", not a dealer can help with bad tires, or so the last 3 tire stores say. Just a big clusterfg. I won't buy any more of their sh** tires. Also, has anybody noticed that Ford wants the front tires at 30#. On the RT/S, that pressure has the sidewalls close to rubbing the ground. Anyway, another call to the GoodYear complaint dept and we'll see where we go now. Anybody found some decent 17" for the SCrew?

Post keep us posted..

I too have the wandering problem with my supercrew. Stated out happy as could be, compaired the truck to a towncar with a box! At about 10k miles I noticed the suspension going away, then the steering wasnt the same tight feeling. At 15k the tires were cupping , idler arm was replaced new tires put on, never has felt as good as before, now at 18k the idler arm needs replacing again, serious wandering and bump steering. Has the feel of an old mustang I had with all the linkage worn out. I love this truck but am trying to figure out what to fix with or without the dealer. I will try to keep track and post progress. I must get it right or trade it off. Hard after 30 grand plus!!!!

I owned a 1974, 1977 and two 1979 F100 and F150's, I loved all of them except one thing common on all of them, road wonder and I thought I was going to get rid of that when I purchased my 2001 supercrew but, NOT!, this is an unstable vehicle to my judgement. It used to be worse until dealer replaced idler arm that had excesive play fron factory at about 9000 miles but it still wonders. I believe it has to do with the typical recirculating ball bearing steering type and the angled steering rods that these trucks have and some suspention and frame flex. It all seems to be nice and tight but it gets out of it's line very easy when driving over slightly uneven surfaces and be careful with shoulderless roads. I do not get a relaxing sensation out of driving this truck because is unpredictable on how much it's going to pull to one side or the other. Just my observations.

Count me in. Mine wanders too. I complained about it some time ago in a previous post on another thread (what would you like to see improved in your Screw).

I do not have the Goodyear tires. I have the BF Goodrich's.

I was told by a buddy that the truck would wander before I bought it (he was a big Chevy fan and I thought he was being partisan). He was right.

As has been noted on this board there are some improvements to be gained with alignments and pressures, but my gut feeling is that there is an aerodynamic design flaw with the truck when it comes to being able to keep it in a straight line going down the road at high speed.

You guys must have mechanical problems that I don't. In fatc my truck is too tight if anything. It will drive straight with no assistance as long as the road is flat. (Look ma no hands) I will agree that if you drop it off the shoulder be ready for a quick response and don't pull it back fast or you'll be in the other lane. That is what I mean by too tight. Anyway, just wanted to say that I have driven several SCrews before and after buying mine and have not experienced that problem.

I've not experienced the same wander that you guys have. I do get the thing jerking around some in ruts on the highway, and also get pushed around by the wind a lot! At first I thought mine was plulling right, but when I was going back on the same road later in the day, it pulled left... duh, wind. But that is my biggest problem... and it happens a lot. My Dad's 96 Chevy will stay straight with even really high gusts. Why do our Fords get pushed around so bad?

When I was shopping for my supercrew I drove a 4X4 and felt very good driving it and did not notice any wonder but the 4X4's do have different reinforcements on the frame and so I believe they are more firm. My truck is a 2 WD and believe me I choose A ford any time over others for off road, over speed bumps, turning corners fast, torque feel, looks, etc, etc, but it does not stay straight on road and that bugs me because that's what I do most. Here I go with the oldies again, the last old truck a had was my 1974 F100 long bed, 390 CI four barrel, C6 auto and the faster I went on it the more stable it got, but this 2001 SC scares me sometimes specially when windy. Excuse me to say this but I also owned chevy's and dodge, the chevrolets being the most stable on pavement and the dodge was a 2001 quad cab and it had a side to side body rocking motion when windy but not really road wonder and the day I traded it for my supercrew I drove that thing on the edge of a two lane road with no shoulder and it was pretty rough. I was specting an uncontrolled reaction from the truck but it handled very good, the way I looked at it is that the two wheels on flat pavement kept the truck under control while the others jumped and hit the rough edge of the road and that has to do with what I believe is a good stiff frame and suspension and I mean side to side and front to back not up and down. After I but my Ford I drove back home trough the same road and tried the same thing and I almost went into the ditch and I tried several times thinking I was not doing it right but it kept handling the same way so I said maybe it needs to break in and I drove it for about 9 to 10k miles until I found out that the idlers arm was too loose and it got replaced and after that I still tried road edges and still is hard to control. I just think these trucks need some touch up's. Other than that I like ford's and I still remember my first truck a 1979 F150 with a 460CI, man, what a kick a$$ truck that was. Ups! sorry for the length. and again this are just my observations.

I have 12k miles on my Screw, no wandering. But I'm running an HD special with the stock 20" rims and 275r45 x 20 Goodyears. I think that the tires are the majority of the problem.

After 40K I noticed the wandering was getting worse, I replace the 17" tires with BFG KO's and installed Edlebrock shocks. I have 50K now with no aligment and it handles great, I can change lanes at 70 to 75MPH and do not need to counter steer to keep the truck in the lane. Also I did crank to torsion bars to bring tne nose up. Kinda funny why you need to spend all this money upgrading a brand new truck to perform the way it should
coming out of the factory.

wandering idea

This morning I found on an exedition site a posting concerning the wandering problem. By accident this guy had the power steering pump replaced cause it was leaking. Said his wandering problem went away 100%, any way this could be connected to the speed sense steering? I dont know how that works, any help out there? Perhaps we are looking in the wrong area. Just something to check.... Im still hoping for a solution!!

Hi. New to site but thought I would sound in. I have a early 01 supercrew 4x2. The truck came with the stock 17" bfg's. Truck wandered bad when on highway or getting passed by a big truck.Took it back to ford dealer and they did a frontend alignment. No better. I lowerd the truck at 1000 miles and changed tires to goodyears and put on diffrent wheels.Same problem.Back to ford and was told the front end was "IN SPEC".Tried diffrent tire psi but did the same with both sets of tires and wheels.Last I took the truck to a front end shop and had them drive it.I dont know what spec he set the front at but the problem is a lot better.I think the problem is in the first run trucks and ford wont set the frontend any diffrent and most time the dealer wont even drive the truck to see what your talking about. Hope this helps.
