Question RPM's in neutral?

While I was cruising from San Diego back to home in Huntington Beach, I thought I'd take a little strain off the engine while on a long down slope. I slipped my S'Crew into neutral while doing 65-70 mph at 2000 RPM. Expecting the RPM to lower below 1000 RPM, it jumped to 2600 RPM? I have never had a vehicle do this to me before. Is this normal for the S'Crew? What's up with that?
