Angry Leer Topper/Bed Extender

Picked up my Leer topper last week, and the bed extender can't flip out - the lift arms for the topper window are in the way. The extender can still be ised, but must be taken out and turned around for use. I would have liked to have waited for Leer's other models to see if they will have the same problem, but needed a topper now.

I went to check out the Raider Cap for the SuperCrew and it had the same problem. The lift arm is 18 inches long, but would work well if the arms were 15 inches long. The bed extender just touches the bottom of the lift arms. Other than that the cap fits like a glove, with interior light and brake light. The Raider dealer said he would contact the manufacturer, advise him of the problem and get back to me. Hopefully a change can be made as there are a lot of us ordering the bed extender. This is something I would not have noticed until too late without your post. Thank-you Waltesa.

Some Raider caps can be found at raider.ca or www.customtruckak.com/brands.htm although I didn't see one specifically for the SuperCrew.[I was in a bit of a rush] It probably fits much like the leer but may be a little cheaper. Hopefully the gas shocks can be shortened. You could also try searching under truck, caps and then search in those results for raider. There were a few sites.

I haven't bought the cap yet as I am waiting to see if the gas shocks can be made to clear the extender. The Leer cap looks pretty much the same as the Raider. I had a price on the Leer and they wanted $1800.00 Canadian, the raider was $1300.00. It is painted to match at the factory like the Leer but I imagine it is pretty hard to say which is better unless they were side by side. I will update as to whether the arms can be shortened when the sales rep. gets back to me. I will also check with him as to a web site and picture of this specific cap.

Unhappy

Jimmy-
Now I remember why I always have disliked J.C Whitney!! After 20 minutes to find the bed xtender, the price is 179 not 159 and the guy on "call" has no idea about free shipping. Oh well likely saved me more pain later. Thanks anyway.

f150supercrew:
stay tuned-i ordered one online
and received email confirmation
of the $159.95 price and shipping
discount-(the shipping discount is
at the "shipping" link on their homepage)
i share your view on jcwhitney
but over the years they occasionally
have a good deal (although this one
looks inadvertant) and i have never
lost an online-ordering battle with a
company when i use their ssl credit card system
i'll let you know how it turns out
thanx

I went to the Raider dealer and ordered the cap today. He was telling me that he contacted Raider and they will not be changing the placement of the shocks right away as they want to research just how many buyers it would effect. They say they hadn't heard of this problem. If the shocks lift the cap door, placed slightly higher, I don't know why it should matter how many it effects. The dealer I am dealing with said they would move the shocks up or install smaller ones with the same lift weight and he would keep the cap if he couldn't make it work to my satisfaction. I asked about a picture on the web or an E-Mail address and he could only tell me that they were having problems with their computers. It was $1300 Can. which would be $879.00 American. [today] The Leer was $1800 Can or $1217.19 American. I wonder if it would be less further south?

Jimmy:

Does the bed extender from JC Whitney use the existing mounting holes in the the Supercrew bed?

Rather than trying to hassle with getting one through the dealer at a decent price, I'd buy the JC Whitney unit if it didn't mean drilling new holes.

Thad:
Sorry to post so late, but I've been overseas, and too busy to chack this site lately. I paid 1295 before taxes for the Leer cap at Hamilton's in London, Ont. Real good installation. However, I'm going to see if I can get different lift arms installed which might correct the problem.

That price is great. I probably would have ordered the Leer with the price the same as the Raider. I think they are very much alike, but the Leer name is better known. My salesman said Raider and Leer were the same Co. at one time but split. ? My dealer has the shorter lift arms in and he is just waiting for the cap. Any day now. I am also waiting for the BedRug. It seems if you want a SuperCrew you better get used to waiting.
