Is the 4.6 enough?
The 4.6 is adequate if you aren't gonna tow anything, BUT, for only $680 (dealer cost) you get an extra 40 horses, and 60 pounds more torque. You'll love having the bigger motor when you put your foot on the gas. And don't forget resale value!
Did you order Limited Slip and Tow Group? For not alot of $ you get a much better equipped truck. And resale value again.
Call your dealer now and get that big motor added!

bluehen,
This topic has been discussed before (see page 5). I think in your situation (4X2) and no plans to haul the 4.6 would be adequate but you may be much happier with the performance of the 5.4L. You probably can change your order at this point if you choose.
Good luck,

Because the supercrew is a bit heavier than the average pickup,I would go with the 5.4. The truck won't struggle if you ever do load it down or tow anything. I strongly recomend the 5.4, it's my opinion that you will wish you did. I had the 4.6 on my last truck, a supercab, but the s-crew is heavier. With the ability to carry 5 to 6 adults, the extra torque alone is worth it. good luck

Thanks for the response.
I contacted the dealer this afternoon and asked for the 5.4L upgrade. They said that they would put it in the computer. The order has not been scheduled, but, was next on line. (what ever that means)
I should know by tomorrow if it took. I just hope that they put change in and aren't fooling with my head.
Well, now another wait.......

I also ordered with a 4.6 and then changed my mind. My truck was scheduled to build during this period so my dealer ordered another one with the 5.4. I have driven both trucks, couldn't tell the difference but that was here in Indiana flatland with no load. My original 4.6 will end up in some other guy's driveway, I want a little thunder under the hood.

I have the 4.6 in my supercrew and couldn't be happier. It has enough power for me and occasionally towing a bass boat, plus the family and all the camping gear.

I had a 97 SuperCab with the 4.6 and I had a 99 SuperCab with the 5.4. I much prefer the 5.4. The 5.4 does not downshift as much as the 4.6 and it tows much better. When I sold my 97, I had several people call me who were looking for the 5.4. The 5.4 gets 1 to 1 1/2 MPG less than the 4.6, but I think it is worth it. I think both engines are good engines. I also recommend the tow package for resale.

I ordered a Lariat 4x2 with a 4.6l engine, figuring that I wasn't going to be towing anything around and didn't need the extra horsepower. That was before finding this site. It seems that most people went with the 5.4 upgrade. I test drove the 4.6 and it seemed fine.
Now I'm wondering if they can upgrade my order before it is scheduled.......

Test Drove both before buying... and bought the 4.6 - and love it.
NO lack of power... it romps... Yes i know the 5.4 romps MORE... but Tim Taylor issues aside... the 4.6 has plenty of power. Takes the mountain grades well. Took boy camping this weekend - loved the power in the mountains.
Have a friend that is almost at 20 mpg with K&N and Cat-Back on his 4.6 equiped supercab. (freeway mpg) So, he has his cake and eats it too.
Brother has 5.4 btw... he loves it.
So... IMHO... 4.6 is WAY MORE than "just adequate". And... geez... not even worrying about resale value. I honestly think that these will become very popular family haulers... and don't anticipate any resale problems.
But if you are going to do serious hauling, or if you are a tim taylor fan... and have the extra bucks... go with the 5.4.

Since I started reading this message board I have come to a conclusion that there is no way to make a good/bad decision when it comes to engine size. We changed our engine from a 4.6 to a 5.4 since we don't know what we are planning on doing with this truck and plan to keep it till it dies. We figure that the gas will come back down in price (we hope) and also have read that the 1 to 1 1/2 MPG less is not to bad. Anyway since my dealer will start crying if I change it again I think that we will stick to this (pay a little more, but never wish for more!!!)

I have driven both the 5.4 and 4.6 engines in the SuperCrew. The 5.4 did impress me but after going back to the 4.6 I did not find it in any way inadequate, just different.
Adding the 5.4 and L/S to the minimum options I wanted put it just out of my budget. This was to be used as a versatile family cruiser (no towing) and the battle of no SuperCrew versus one with a 4.6 was no contest. And at $200 over invoice for any one on the lot it was not a question of getting a better deal.
I have over 600 miles on it so far and have no regrets with the 4.6. It may take a little more pedal to get it to perform but it does not dissappoint. The only situation where the 5.4 might make a difference to me is highway cruising on winding / slightly hilly terrain. The 4.6L downshifts often to maintain speed. But that's where the overdrive defeat works nicely. Keeps the revs up which actually makes it more fun and responsive.
Any SuperCrew is better than no SuperCrew!

Just got back from our annual May long weekend snowmobile trip up here in Alberta,Canada and took the boys in my new supercrew 4x4 17" tires, 10 spoke rims...4.6L engine.
The 4.6L did the job pulling 4 sleds, 4 guys, fuel, gear and didn't miss a beat all weekend! Sure there are more powerful motors out their like the 5.4L, but if I wanted a real puller I would of went to a diesel motor. All you have to do is take off the overdrive, set the cruise at 100km/hr and let the revs take over!
My buddies were very impressed with the truck and couldn't believe that it was only a 4.6L motor under the hood. We trailered up through the Rodgers pass with a lot of big hills, twisty corners and the 4.6L ran like a trooper.
When buying my supercrew 4x4 my needs were to not pull a 26' trailer, but to have a vehicle to transport people around and pull a mid size load around full of toys...the 4.6L does this very well with reliability under the hood.
So far the below list is what I have pulled with out a problem with the 4.6L:
* 4 place snowmobile trailer (loaded with four sleds, 4 passengers, extra fuel, equiptment, gear and through the mountains).
* Mastercraft ski boat (full of fuel, 3 passengers, equiptment, through the the B.C and Alberta mountains).
Unless your planning on hauling real big epuiptment the 4.6L does everything I need it to...and if down the road (but I doubt it) feel I need for more power I will either install a chip, exhaust or go to a diesel.
The 4.6L without a doubt is no slouch and rocks for the smaller more realiable Triton motor!
Just my two bits boys!

I chose the 5.4L for the noticeable increase in power. I will spend alot of time on the highway (I95) and like the passing performance. I would recommend that anyone regardless of engine size to order the towing package for the tranny cooler as well as the heavy duty battery and shocks and other additions. To me the small $$s for the package is cheap insurance.

For those of you who want the 4.6L, you might want to wait a few months until the rest of the F-150 line becomes a 2001 model. According to blueovalnews.com, the 2001 4.6L will have the same 240hp rating that the '99+ Expedition has recieved. This should make this engine choice much more satisfying to those who are "on the fence".
There are also a few other alterations that will probably be running changes on the Supercrew... like
Lighted vanity mirrors
XLT gets Lariat color-keyed leather steering wheel
remote keyless entry standard on XLT
there are a few more...check out http://www.blueovalnews.com/2001_f150.htm
Of course, we still don't get...
Heated seats like Expy (not to mention GM and Dodge)
Trip computer (like Expy, SuperDuty and Dodge)
Auto 4WD (like Expy and GM)
The lack of these options is unfortunate seeing as the Engineering is already done since the Expy shares the F150 platform.
