Angry Oil Filter for the 5.4L

Has anyone yet tried to replace their oil filter on the 5.4L 4x4? It looks like there is no way to remove it without getting oil on the front differential. Is the 4.6L the same? Has anyone fabricated a drip tray to keep the oil off the diff?

Well I don't know if they have changed the 5.4 for the 2000's, but my 99 F-150 has a "drip tray" already on it, and it works great. Never had any real problems with it, and have had a lot of oil changes done, as I have 25,000 miles on it in less than a year.

Question

Well, I'll have to take another look under the truck. I sure don't recall seeing anything that looked like a drip tray over the front diff.

Question

I see from another thread that the 4.6 oil filter location differs depending on the plant that built the engine. Could this be similar in the case of the 5.4L?

I too am not happy with the filter location. I am looking for a filter relocation kit that uses the same (check valved) filter.

Anybody seen one?

Question

MNFORD99;

I know this is asking alot, but is there anyway you can get a picture of the driptray under your oil filter? (Or are you putting us on?)
Neither 1stSuperCrew or I seem to have the same setup as you.

My 2000 with the 5.4 has a plastic "drip tray" over the front diff. Directs the oil right into the pan. Real nice setup. I too was worried when I looked at the filter location. I never noticed the drip tray until I took the filter off. It was then that I saw the runoff, and thought hmmmmm pretty slick idea.

I still much prefer the remote filter setup that my 97 4.6 had. Easy to reach, no mess at. all. You really did not need to even crawl under the vehicle if you knew where it was.

FarmBoy,
Thanks for the info. I will look again. First 1k Oil change due soon anyway. I wonder if the 4.6 remote filter parts would fit the 5.4?
