Post SuperCrew Stereo Upgrade

Is it necessary to change out front and back speakers, or would just putting some high quality 3 or 2 ways up front do. I want to just change the fronts, and add an amp to power the fronts and a sub in the back, and leave the rear speakers alone (not on the amp). Will this work and give better than average sound upgrade for around $350 - $500. Thats about my budget, any advice for this novice would help. I just want good clean sound with good bass. thanks.

That wouldn't be a bad start I would suggest buy a 4 channel amp so you can change your rear speakers latter. Trust me you will won't to. You may want to just hang on for a while with the factory system. Its really not to bad.

jberwin1:

Have you upgraded your factory system or are you ok with it. If you have, what did you replace it with.

I have not upgraded the system. I am very happy with it. I have the premium sound with cassette and six disc changer. I have put sound systems in the past in my trucks. I have no plans now but may change out the speakers for some polk 5x7.

Single CD and Sound system is surprisingly good quality for those who dont like Rap and Lots of Bass. It does have decent speakers that provide some bass, but I would like to add an Amp and possibly a subwoofer. If I could find a tiny Bose product to sneak behind the rear seat next to the jack I would!!

?Does anyone know if adding components (Amp,Sub) will affect the Auto Road Noise system? This quieting effect at complete stops is very cool- I dont want to lose it with the addition of an amp.

I will be looking at the Boston Acoustics 5x7's. Very nice sound-crisp and clear- for all four doors. I did see two different kinds of BA 5x7's, one a little cheaper priced than the other-which would still make good sound for the rear doors if price is a problem.
The real problem is deciding which portion of the 40/60 seat I can live without being able to fold down. The '60' side is looking very promising for a 10 or 12 inch sub. I guess momma's groceries will be going in the bed of the pickup now. Heck that's why I bought a truck- it was to carry stuff in the bed.

As for the road noise system. I spoke to an installer at Al & Ed's in San Diego, CA. He states that they will turn the system off (or to zero)-(NOT disconnect it). The reason for this zero setting is that the installers will be setting the 'gains' on your amplifier to a certain level based on the acoustics and components. With the auto road noise system ON, if you were to hit that certain speed, with the right sound level you would more than likely fry your amp, and/or blow your speakers when you reached it.
The gains are set with the system "off" to get the most out of the amp, the speakers and the surroundings. When you slow down- and the stereo goes softer, you will not get the full impact of your hard earned stereo.

**Now I cant remember if they were 5x7's or a 5" round with a tweeter. He said they would make a custom install to fit the rounds in the doors-with no cutting. Anyways- they do have some nice 5x7's in stereo shops that wil upgrade your doors rather nicely.

Don't give up rear seating for a sub. Might as well have bought a supercab. The JL Audio center console stealthbox for the F-150 should work in the supercrew and give better imaging than a rear mounted sub.
