Question SuperCrew Towing Help

Hello everyone! this is my first post and would like to say thanks for all the great info avalible on this site. I own a 90' F150 as my daily driver and have a fiberglass 92-96 body on my sand toy F150. Anyway I'm in a dilema that I hope you can help with. I was planning to replace our car with a F250 psd as my wifes daily driver and to tow my 6000lb GVWR toy F150. However I really like the look of the SuperCrew and if I could be convinced that 5.4L SuperCrew could handle towing my truck in a 24-26ft enclosed trailer I'd be more than happy not to hear the diesel noise all the time. I would even supercharge the Supercrew if thats what it took. I don't doubt that the SuperCrew could tow it i'm just wondering about long term effects to the engine and tranny. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. THANKS

GON4X4N,

I tow a 30' camper that weighs 6000lbs empty.
I had a 99 2X4 F-150 SuperCab with the 5.4, 3.55 limited slip axal and the tow package and had no problem towing that much weight.
My SuperCrew is equipped exactly the same and is rated to tow 8000lbs. I'm sure the SuperCrew will tow the same as the SuperCab.
I will be towing it this weekend.

The F250 standered power plant is the 5.4, but that aside I towed a 8,000lb track hoe plus the 2000lb trailer no problem. If I was going to do it all the time I would add helper springs.

Just don't get the Lariat package. It comes with 17" wheels; they take 500 lbs right off the top of your tow capacity. The 5.4L XLT (16" Al wheels) 4x2 is rated to pull 8000 lbs of trailer. That only gives you a tone for that trailer. But I think you'd be in great shape. For less than the supercharger (can you say void warranty?) I'd go with a Superchips module (see that thread in the aftermarket computer chips section).

The chip (itself) won't void your warranty and will give you a lil more hp & torque. Not a ton, just about 10%. The price you pay is that you must run 92 octane. The chip uses advanced timing to generate the greater force/power and also about 1 mpg inprovement in economy.

The class III package (on my truck) includes a stout tranny oil cooler and and engine oil cooler and even a power steering fluid cooler (a new one on me).

The truck is also shorter wheelbased that the 250 (I'm pretty sure). You may find the 250 a little better suited for the tow; but every other day of your life you will love the SCrew so much more.

Hope that helps

Joe

Going from my old 4x2 Supercab to my new 4x4 Supercrew I of course find my tow hitch/ball sits to high for the small tent trailer I have. With going to the taller truck, which size drop hitch/ball would I need? Is there a standard drop down size with going to a stock 4x4 from 4x2? I'm guessing a 4" might do it.

Sonoma,
The 4x4 is 3 inches higher at the top. I can only assume that the bumper/hitch height is also 3 inches higher.

I've only seen 2 7/8" drops (not 3's). I'd measure the frame height at the trailer axle (assuming the frame is level to the tounge). then measure the ground to hitch height.

I guess this all seems obvious. But I've seen people with 5 or 6 different ball mounts in their garage because they didn't taske the time to measure from scratch.

Best of luck,
Joe

Question

I currently have a 98 Supercab that I tow a 22' trailer with. I am looking at trading the trailer and am also considering a fifth wheel. But my lease is due in Sept. and would like to look at a supercrew. Has anyone towed or seen anyone tow a fifth wheel with a supercrew. My thinking is that the box is too short. The fifth wheel hitch has to sit over the back axle. On the supercrew this would be too close to the back of the cab.

Sonoma Super Crew--

When I first backed up my 'Crew to the 16' trailer that I use to pull my '51 Ford 8N tractor and mower, I found the drop needed was 6 inches. Unfortunately, the rating for a ballmount with a 6" drop goes down from 5000# to something less than what I need, so I purchased a heavy-duty adjustable ballmount. A bit pricey, but, hey, so was the 'Crew; besides, it looks good back there, like I'm really gonna do some work with that goodlookin' truck 'stead of just show it off!

I went to my tow hitch dealer today about my need for a 4" drop hitch but I have a problem.
I have a 18" long (hole to hole)receiver/ball that has a bike rack attached to the middle. This worked great for my 4x2 Supercab but now with my 4x4 Supercrew I would need a 4" drop for the ball to reach the trailer. Only problem is no one makes a 18" receiver with a 4" drop. A dealer told me my only choice would be to buy a normal size 4" drop for the rear so that I can still tow and to have a front mounted type III hitch to the front of the truck, this way I could still use the bike rack which is attached to a tow hitch receiver.
Has any one ever attached a front mount hitch to a F150? Does it clear the plastic flairing below the bumper?
