SuperCrew Backseat Headrests
I read a review that the backseats lack of headrests is a minor problem for the backseat passangers.
"There are no headrests on the back seat, so a few sharp bumps got the head unpleasantly acquainted with the rear window. Gutowski says headrests will show up in '02 models." (http://www.usatoday.com/money/consumer/autos/mareview/mauto513.htm)
Does anyone know of someplace to buy some matching headrests before the 2002 fix?
Just wondering...
PS: I plan to order a SC 4x4 Lariat, Black/Graphite next week sometime.
I plan to insist on the following:
Trailer Tow Group, Class III
5.4L Triton V8
Axle, 3.55 Ratio Limited Slip Rear
Bed Extender
Cab Steps
Heater, Engine Block (LPO)
Radio, Premium AM/FM Stereo w/Cassette, Includes 6-Disc Compact Disc Changer.
Skid Plates • 4WD Models Includes Transfer Case, Cross Member & Fuel Tank Skid Plates.
Window, Sliding Rear
I also plan on a drop in bedliner, and an OEM style cap once they become available. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I've seen the bucket seats, sunroof, and heard about the entertainment center, and want to pass on those items.
Thanks,
-Dave in VA

Oh Come On Dave!
You really need to add the sunroof! Other than that, you'll have a fine truck.
Have seen very little on topic of backseat headrests. I would also be interested in knowing if anything exists.

EvilleSC,
I like sunroofs, but had some leaking on my last one. Besides, it's another thing to go wrong, and with my luck...
Regarding the headrests, earlier I e-mailed an aftermarket company that had headrests for a 3rd row seat for the Expedition (matching colors). I am not sure if I could make them fit & the company hasn't responded back after about a month. (http://www.salesco.com/rearseat/expedition.htm)
In checking the FORD website and looking at the 360 degree interior views of the SC and the Expedition, the back seats look identical. I was wondering if the internal mechanicals were still there from the Exp in the SuperCrew.

The only reason I am being so cautious about this is a co-worker got rear-ended in December & whiplashed his head against the glass (standard cab) so hard that it broke the glass and cracked his skull. I hate the thought of this happening to my backseat passengers, especially as my kids grow up. I suppose I could always retrofit something in a couple of years, but thought I would check with others for a better solution first.
BTW, did you get an estimated delivery date?

You are probably alot further along with your research than anyone on the question of headrests...keep us posted on any solution you find.
When I ordered, dealer estimated 5 weeks. High volume dealer with maybe 10 SCs on the lot right now. On another thread,(Order Date) there is an 800 # with instructions on how to get status of an ordered vehicle, and so far mine only says "clean and unscheduled" so it'll be awhile.
Only complaint I have seen so far on Sunroof is some wind noise at highway speeds. Maybe owners who have sunroofs and are still reading this board will start a sunroof thread for those not committed yet?

Having just read the head rest post I went outside to check my rear seat. Although head rests would be nice they would block much of the rear window. At least the seat backs are higher then on my old Supercab, my kids use to always hit there heads on the back window. So far with the taller seat back it has'nt been a problem. I think most kids would miss the window but adults might hit.
As far as the moon roof, I also had concerns about leaks, window sticking open on a rainy day, etc. I talked to my dealer about that and he told me Ford had no history of moon roof problems, only after market add ons. So far I enjoy my moon roof and everyone that has seen it loves it. (I'll keep my fingers crossed on rainy days)

I'll continue to research the headrest issue, and post anything interesting I find here. When thinking about the Sonoma's message, I wonder what the comparison of the outward view would be blocked between the SC and Expedition. Working under the assumption the back seats are the same distance from the internal rear view mirror, and that the overall length to the rear "tailgate" is approximately the same (+- about a foot) on both, I would think the reduced rear visibility (of rear traffic) should be about the same as in the Expedition. This is something I will check out at the dealership when I go in to place my order (All academic—I’ve chosen the SC because of the comparably less cost for similarly equipped vehicles).
If the review I read was correct, perhaps Ford will have an upgrade kit available for those SuperCrew owners who want to upgrade.
Regarding the sunroof, keep the rubber gasket conditioned and the tracks and clean and lubricated and I am sure you will have better luck than I did. Also, it will help if you don't live in a gritty place--I was living at the beach and had a fair amount of fine blowing sand that got into everything. I just decided the maintenance wasn't worth the sunshine.

dtrosch,
I had read in one of the Car rags that clearance behind back seats of the SuperCrew was adequate-so no head rests would be needed. What do they know!
Where are you in McLean? I'm building a house in Great Falls. Will be moving back there next spring.

SuperCrew,
It's nice to see someone else in the Northern VA area. Did you buy your truck from Kip Killmons @ Tysons? The wife & I saw a blue one on the lot when we looked tonight after dinner, but I think it was XLT 4x2. So far the best I've found is the UBS buying service @ $100 over dealer "invoice"(Jerry's Ford). We bought our Subaru Forrester the same way and were really pleased with the deal.
Regarding headrests, after sitting in the Expedition and SuperCrew, my opinion is that the headrests wouldn't be too bad for rear vision. I think I am mostly concerned with someone rear-ending me in beltway traffic. Otherwise, the headrests probably aren't too significant. Being a brand new parent, perhaps I am in my overprotective stage...

We are on the border of McLean and Great Falls, just off of Spring Hill Road and the Dulles Toll Road. We will have a wonderful view of the new Gannett/USA Today headquarters they are building opposite from us across the Toll Road. Where is your new home in Great Falls? We got ours from someone who fled the country to avoid arrest/indictment on the Campaign Finance Scandal (an associate of John Wong). I've got to hand it to our real estate agent--she found us a real gem when we moved back from California.

I plan on ordering a SC Mon. May 1. I too would like it to have rear headrests. Your head is just too close to rear window. If they do bring out headrests in the future, I
hope they will offer a retrofit kit. The Sport Trac has Explorer style headrests that
are short, but can be raised and pivoted to
fit behind front seat when folded-would work
great on SC.

yes the headrests are an issue. coming back from palo alto, ca my 12 yr old was working on a serious neck pain as he snoozed in the back seat. prior to dozin off he slid himself down low in the seat to take advantage of the low back.
so, i'm walking through target auto section today and i see some grey (just a shade lighter than my dark graphite int.) fleece travel pillows (approx. 8" high X 12" long) on sale for $3.40. hmmm. they also had 1 1/2" wide velcro on sale for $4.80. hmmm. so i bought 5 pillows (you should know i'm compulsive by now) and a roll of the velcro.
now i haven't done it yet, but as i sit the pillows atop the back seat (only 2...compulsive but not crazy enough to put all 5 up there) it just so happens the depth of the pillow is perfect. my wife, being talented as she is, could surely round the corners slightly, possibly even taking an inch out of the height, and sew a strip of velcro on the back of each. then it's up to me. i'd have to break out the measuring tape, ensure the velcro is cut to the proper lenght and MAKE SURE i stick it straight on the window. for $15 bucks, i could have some removable headrests. and yes, if the kids thrash em, i have 3 spares.

USAF K9,
I like the creative solution.
Attaching the headrest pillows to the glass is an effective and inexpensive method. If you complete the project, can you post some photos for the rest of us to see how it looks?
When I lived in Seal Beach (just south of Long Beach), there were hundreds of custom car/truck businesses within a 50-mile radius. The one place I have tried contacting (Salesco, http://www.salesco.com/rearseat/expedition.htm) is in San Dimas. The place was recommended for replacement 3rd row seats by someone in a Suburban message board I frequented before I decided on a SuperCrew with a cap. I would be surprised is one of these custom shops wouldn't come up with a kit for an OEM look & feel using Ford cloth/leather for an exact match.
Unless I find an inexpensive kit in the next year, I will probably wait until the 02 trucks come out to see how Ford fixes it. Then I'll look at replacement OEM seats, Expedition seats from a junkyard, any available kits, and price out a nice looking solution.
