Can anyone provide me with some solid info on this TSB before I start quizzing my dealer? I would like to be armed with plenty of ammo before taking them on. Im not having any tranny problems of any kind but I like being informed. Thanks in advance, -crewchief

Sure enough, I have the same sticker on my truck. Not sure what it could mean, maybe it has something to do with the gasket being reuseable. Funny that it has a void date of August 2000.
I'm going to my dealership in a few days to have skidplates installed so I'll ask about it. I guess we could always phone that 800 number.

crewchief, Sonoma,
I also have that sticker on my tranny pan.
I called the 800 # and talked to a Joe.
He said the sticker is on every transmission at least until the expiration date.
He said that when a mechanic calls with transmission problems and it is before the void date, they do not want the mechanic to work on it. They want to exchange the transmission and have the old one sent back so they can find out what went wrong with it.
He said that the TSB says what he told me.
I told him that I had a 97 and a 99. He said they probably had a sticker too.
I think someone else should call the number to see if they get the same info. Joe seemed to be strait forward with me. The number goes directly to the transmission department.
crewchief,
I noticed some waterspots on your tranny pan.
You need to get under there and wash and wax that thing.

I've got it too. It made me curious, but I didn't worry yet.
If Skyjet's experience holds. Then I think it is a GOOD omen. Ford is actually concerned to find out anything they can as quickly as they can. That means if anything is improperly designed, we will find out in the warranty period.
Everything seems to be going great so far!

This was discussed in the Transmissions area on this message board.
It is a part of Ford's Statistical Process Control system. All transmissions made over a set period of time are tagged. If they have problems in the field, they are removed and replaced, and the removed trans is shipped to Ford for disassembly and inspection. This way they know what the problems in the field are so that they can correct them. IMHO, I'd hope to get a transmission with this tag (FWIW, the tag is green for 4R70W transmissions and orange for 4R100s.). That way if you ever have a problem, you get a new trans instead of having Joe-Blow-mechanic trying to tear apart and repair it, and those who don't get a tagged trans get a higher quality product due to what is found in the "dissections".

Thanks for the info, this board continues to be a major help even after we get our trucks. Hopefully no-one has to take advantage of the sticker program.
This is copied from "Factory Technician" posting in March as explained by RPFB.
"--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The green 'Prior to Repair' sticker is not an indicator of anything wrong with the transmission. Ford will occasionally sticker every transmission made for a given period (ussually about a month) for statistical process control reasons. What they're looking for is any failures within the stated period to be returned to the factory for analysis, and the owner gets a new transmission instead of having the broken one repaired. The given production period is the control set, the failed transmissions are the sample. Don't worry about the transmission unless you have problems, and if you do before the test period ends, you get a new one. It's actually a plus to have a stickered transmission.
GBE
BTW, 4R100s have orange stickers. Same story."

My 97 had a tranny fluid leak. They replaced the pan cover gasket twice. The third time they replaced the complete transmission. They said it was either a porous or cracked case. I don't know if the TSB is related or not, but they sure replaced the tranny with no fuss at all.
Skyjet, I have to apologize for the waterspots on the tranny pan. I would have cleaned them off first but I was trying to make it appear that I am not quite that compulsive. Actually the spots were what drew my attention to the sticker in the first place. Its nice to know that Im not the only one here that would give a seemingly trivial matter such as this the attention it truly deserves. After all a waterspot is a waterspot regardless of where it is. Its very existance is vile and loathsome and just because it goes unnoticed by some does not make it any less so. It is my belief that they should be delt with swiftly and severely, washing and waxing being two of the more common methods of dealing with this hellish plague. If you have personal experiences in dealing with surface contaminate removal that you would like to share with us please feel free to post them. Again thank you for your concern with my problem and best wishes... -crewchief
