Noise?

I just upgraded my 98 scab to an 02 screw and I have a noise that sounds like a computer fan coming from the dash that I didn't have in my scab. Its really noticeable when the key is turned to acc to listen to the radio. The fan noise is louder than the radio. What is this fan or noise from and for?

Thanks Donnie

It looks like I'm the first one to read your first post, welcome to the site.

I had an 01 screw, and don't remember any fan noise. Is it a Lariat with climate control?

It is a lariat. I don't know if it has climate control? The control panel is all digital unlike my scab that had manual twist *****.

Thanks for the help!

Yes that digital panel means its got the Climate control. I'm not positive on this but I have noticed those climate equipped trucks have vents below that panel, it could be a fan working to remove heat but I dont know for sure.

I was thinking the fan is always on moving air through the cabin, maintaining the set temp, providing fresh air, and stabilizing humidity.

I think it is actually a cooling fan for the radio/cd player. My memory is a little rusty, but I think FoMoCo was experiencing problems with cd players overheating in the late 90s/early 2000s trucks. Sometime around '01, '02, or '03 they added small cooling fans for the stock cd player.

If you want more info do a search here using terms like "cd hot" or something like that.

Look in the HVAC thread above and look for the Blend Motor thread or Growling Noise thread. This could be from your Climate control being on Auto and the blend motor making that noise. I have an 06 SC and it took me a year to figure it out. If you want to experiment, try this. Make sure it's on Auto and raise the temp several degrees. Then start coming down on the temp 1degree at a time and see if you hear it at some point. If so, it's the blend motor when it reaches the thermostat setting.
