Is a normal size toolbox not practical for a SCrew?

I'm thinking about putting a normal size toolbox on my '07 Supercrew with the 5.5' bed. For those of you that have a 5.5' bed with a toolbox, do you find that it makes your truck bed unusable? I don't intend to get a bed extender. Thanks for your input.

It really depends on what you plan on carrying

then you would probally be fine with the box, and if you decide you don't like how much room it takes up, you can always take it back out later

Not at all, I carry a six foot ladder (sideways) in the back of my bed and sometimes crap that I have to bring to the boys at the job site.

i'd say that it is... i work at a lumberyard, and someone had a screw with a fullsize toolbox, and i was still able to load a pallet of concrete with a forklift w/o damaging the toolbox, and they were still able to shut the tailgate... really, what else do you need to keep in your bed that would be longer than a pallet? there are also bed extenders, and you can use a trailer to haul really long stuff.

i bought a scab, and am always kicking myself in the *** when it comes time to take some friends out... i would gladly trade the extra foot of bed space for a bigger cab, if it were practically possible w/o trading trucks.

I put this in back of my truck

$50 at Lowes and it locks. I secured it to the back of the bed with a black bungy cord through the hooks.

I have a flip up tonneau cover that opens like a hatchback on a car. It's super easy to take out also, just slides out. I keep a hydraulic jack, tire iron, tow strap, various tools and stuff. I do have to unhook the bungy cord and slide it forward when I need something, but that's pretty rare and well worth the hassle considering what I would have to do with a "real" tool box if ever needed to take it out as much as I do this one.

I had a box in my 06 Scab. I wanted to be able to slide drywall and other items all the way to the front so I put some wood down and set the box on top of that.

When I put mine in I thought my bed would be useless since I've only got about 3 1/2 feet of useable space. I've had it for one year now and I have not ONCE come across a situation where I needed more space. I have a trailer if I ever really need to get some stuff hauled, but for regular home depot trips, fishing, lawn care stuff, pallets, bricks, and MUCH more I think it's fine. Thought about the bed extender, but I would just leave the tailgate down and use ratchet straps instead of that!

I've got one in mine and sometimes it's ok sometimes it isn't. I really don't have a choice b/c I don't want to leave my turnout gear outside or in the cab of the truck.
My dad just bought this one from lowes. It works ok if you don't need to put anything large in the tool box.http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?actio...018&lpage=none

I have a UWS(United Welding Services) box that's drop about half way into my bed. Still gives me the length I need should I need some longer items carried. Most toolboxes become junkpiles. I find this size box allows for me to carry most anything I would need a box for but gives me the use of the small 5.5 bed. I have a full size UWS box I'm trying to sell now(if any georgia folks are interested, email me).
