Filter tool
I just purchased a fuel filter for my 01 Screw, it came with a plastic tool, looks like some kind of a clamping or holding tool. The Haynes manual states to use a special tool to remove the gas lines. Do I really need this??? And whats the best method to relieve the fuel pressure??? Any info would be appreciated....
Thanks,
Thanks,
Yes, you do need a tool to remove the connectors from the fuel filter. THe fuel lines going to and from the filter are typically held by a spring clamp. Release that clamp, then insert the tool into the connector to release the fuel line. It can be a bit tricky the first time you do it. Try to be uphill from the filter when removing it. About a pint of fuel will come out.
I've never had to release pressure from the fuel line on any vehicle to remove the filter. Maybe, it it had just been running, the fuel line would still be pressurized. I typically wait for the exhaust system to cool off before remove a fuel filter.

I always relieve the fuel pressure prior to replacing a fuel filter. It's not difficult at all. Find the fuse diagram section in your owners manual. Look for the fuse that corresponds to the fuel pump. Pull the cover off the fuse box under the hood and remove the fuse. Start your truck. It probably will not start, but if it does, it will only be very momentarily. Drink a beer, becasue you have just successfully depressureized your fuel system.
I agree with worland's comments about it being a pain. You really do need the tool in order to do the job.

Thanks guys. Bought a cheep filter tool at the local auto parts store. Tried for fifteen minutes to pull the fuel pump relay out to no avail. I resorted to the Haynes repair manual and disconnected the inertia switch in the kick panel to be safe. It was a pain to get to the forward hose with the tool. there was another hose crossing right at the coupling. But...allswell again. Next week.....Transmission filter Change. Thanks again
