Question Is this a Good Deal?

On a 03 Supercrew Lariat FX4 Loaded, 5.4L, 39k miles for $22k in very good condition. If so, I will be looking at trading in my 03 Scab flareside XLT FX4, 5.4L 32k miles for it. Would me asking for $19k for my truck seem like too much? FWIW, my truck is black, in overall great shape, and ding free. Mechanically immaculate. I have added a true dual exhaust, toolbox, spray in bedliner, among other goodies added on my truck. What I'm looking at has just a spray in bedliner, a tonneau, and a grill guard added. The body is in very good shape, and is the beautiful green and tan two tone.

The reason why I am doing this is b/c I have just now realized my need for the crew cab, ie family, friends, etc. I've driven my Scab XLT for a year, no complaints, however, I am not in as great of a need of the 6.5 ft bed (as I initially thought I would be,) as I am of the larger cab, and all of the Lariat's bells and whistles!

In essence, this boils down to a 4WD SCAB XLT being traded in for a 4WD SCREW LARIAT with a 7000 mile difference in the Scab's favor... Are these numbers realistic? I really love my truck and will miss it, however, this Lariat is very beautiful, and I would really desire to get it if the numbers are within reason... I would also plan on keeping it for its entire lifetime. What do you guys think?

I wouldnt pay near 19k for a 03 Scab, so i highly doubt the dealer is gonna give you that on a trade in.

Run it through KBB, thats what the dealer is gonna use

Both are overpriced, but that doesn't really matter since you are just paying the difference. I think you are probably looking at $5-6k (maybe more) difference to trade up to the screw. Here's why it's that much more:

1. Supercrew vs. Scab
2. Lariat vs. XLT
3. Retail vs. wholesale (dealer is going to sell for retail, give you wholesale for your trade)

The 7000 mile difference doesn't really matter, both are low miles.

Good luck!

I'll sell you my 2003 Lariat Screw for $20k and pay for the gas for you to drive it home from Detroit! You just have to figure out what you want to do with your Scab.

Check KBB/Edmuds for dealer trade in and private party prices.

$5k is a good target to upgrade per firsttimeford's reasons from a dealer. New, the Screw is about $3k over a Scab which holds pretty well used. Options don't hold their value as well, but a base Lariat cost about $3k more than a base XLT of same configuration.

You'll be lucky for a dealer to give you $12k for your truck and get out the door for less than $17k for the new one at the same dealer. You can try to play the games since you have a trade, but advertising @ $22k is extremely high for what someone like me who only paid $28k new in 2003 for a similar Screw.

You should have much better luck buying directly from another owner, though. I bet you could do it for $3k if you are patient. Sell your truck for $13k and get a Lariat Screw for $15-16k. That would probably mean having to buy the new one first, then waiting to sell your old one.

In Florida, do you pay sales tax on the cost delta when you trade a vehicle in or on the whole sales price of the new vehicle. That sometimes makes it worth paying a little more from a dealer if you only pay sales tax on $5k vs. $17k.
