First welcome to the site.
Look through some of the archives, I'm sure you'll find some reviews as well as some recommedations on what to keep a eye out for.

I would recommend the 5.4 over the 4.6, the power difference is very noticeable. Some people have had problems with the sun/moon roof. Like swank07 said, do a search here for any other comments.

Nothing really to avoid for any particular model year. I agree with the 5.4L recommendation. I love my 2003 Screw!

i have a 01 with the 5.4. i use it mainly for towing my toy. so far it's been really good to me. i'm satisfied with it so far. and i come from mainly owning import vehicles which have also served me well and would always consider buying another. but after previously owning a ranger and encountering no problems with that truck. time came to get a full size, i decided to try the f150 instead of the tundra of the same year.

Love mine...

I'm the original owner of an 01 Screw with a 5.4 V8 and towing package. I use it as transportation to/from work (7 miles round trip), towing a 3700# travel trailer at least once a month, and traveling back/forth to Atlanta about every other week (720 mile round trip). I was worried about the short bed when I first bought it. To my pleasure, I have never run into a problem concerning this. Yard waste, lumber, packing for camping trips, bicycles, etc., no problems. I have a wife, kid, and two dogs. We all travel in the cab with no issues. The dogs are 30 and 40#'s respectively. They just lie down on the larger fold down seat in the rear and the kid sits on the single. Make sure you get the bed extender cage, it's invaluable. I believe this model was the first with rear seat headrests. They get sunburned but they are nice for your passengers. It looks weird back there without them so I was glad they put them in. The tint in the back masks the burn on the back of the headrests so it's not too much of an eyesore. Also get the sprayed in bed liner, it's a must. One negative is the contoured dash makes it difficult to place odds and ends in the truck. My flip style cell phone has GPS capability and it has to stay open to work. There's really no place to lay it so that I can see the display when driving. I set it in the cup holder and it'll do but a flat surface somewhere would be nice. That's really no big deal but still worth noting. Stay on top of the maintenance and this truck will last and last. Good luck!

I am also new to this site and recently purchased a 01 supercrew 4.6 and I love it! There is plenty of legroom in the back for my kids. I had to make a small adjustment to my Little giant ladder that I carry(because of the short bed) but other than that I am very happy. I just had the Hypertech program installed and I love the added pep and firmer shifting.

I bought a 2002 f150 in may of 06. A few months later I had to replace the battery and alternator @60k miles ($450) So far it has been holding up well. It is a nice body style and fun to drive. The newer generation F150 looks and feels bulkier than this model that is why I like our generation.
My advice is for you to consider the best deal when it comes down to price, options, condition; even if it is a 4.6L. (the 4.6 is sluggish when towing but if you do not plan on towing, 4.6 will work out just fine) Now I on the other hand was very picky and wanted a black truck, with tan interior, 5.4L in the supercrew model. Nothing else would suffice......not even the new body style would do. Purchase exactly what you want because you will be paying for it and most importantly, you are going to be driving the truck so drive it with pride and no regrets!!!

I own an 03 SCrew and had a 00 SCab before it. After having the SCrew, I'll never go back to an extended cab again. I love my truck. 90K miles and no problems at all. The 5' foot bed was a concern but I have never had any issues where I've needed the extra foot. Not sure if you are planning on any mods but most mods for these trucks are reasonably priced also.

I really think you'll be happy with yours, just make sure to run a carfax on it first. Well worth the $10 or $15, whatever it is. Other than that, as long as it hasn't been abused or in any accidents, you'll love it.

You definately want a spray in bedliner, should consider seat covers also if it isn't leather. These trucks really hold their resale value also. I'd go with a 5.4L if you have that option, you'll be happy you did, especially if you're towing anything. Not that the 4.6 is bad, but the extra HP is nice and there isn't a major difference in Gas mileage.

My 2001 has over 110K miles. No engine problems at all. Had to manually close sunroof 2 weeks ago. Will wait until spring before I try to open it again, LOL.

I have on 01 Screw with 143,000 miles on it and never had a problem except the regular 5.4l stuff. Replaced plugs and COP's and thats it. Doesn't burn oil and runs like a champ.

I have a 2001 with 101K on it. The only major problem I have had is the rear end. It was was replaced by Ford at 72K and again by Ford at about 95K. The bolts that hold the ring in place backed out. I have done the basic front end things tie rod ends, ball joints and one wheel bearing. The truck still runs like a champ and looks pretty good too. Check the bottom of the doors on the inside for rust problems.
