Although there are probably more good than bad, I'd avoid 2004 models. If you want the 6.5' bed, that's only 2006+ models. Since you already have a truck, I assume you know there is an endless amount of configurations.
Even if ou are only looking used, look at the www.Fordvehicles.com website and build your own. The trims/options/feature content hasn't changed that much since 2004.

The only thing I recommend because I don't know what equipemnt you want is the 5.4L and 3.73LSD axle. There is no reason to get the 4.6L or 3.55 axle ratio. Fuel mileage is not better, but performance is.

Depending on your budget, Ford should be clearing out new 2007 models for $10-12k off MSRP as they have in the past.

There were several improvments made in '05 model, so I'd suggest looking for a 2005 or newer truck. I've owned F-150's with the 4.6L & 3.55 gears, and I wouldn't waste my time/money on one again. Definitely go for a 5.4L with 3.73 limited slip.

Ford offers more trim levels and options than any other half-ton on the market. I would also suggest going to Ford on-line and check out the different models. With 0% interest, a new truck may end up being cheaper than a used one.

Get a Screw with the reverse sensing system. Every time you back up you will be glad you have it.

My truck did not come with it. In 6 months I have backed into two cars which I could not see over my tailgate or in the mirrors.

X2 on the Reverse Sensing System (RSS). Since '05, I've had it on every Ford I've bought.

I'm on my 7th F-150 and have managed not to back into anyone (yet). The bed on the newer models sits rather high, and it is hard to see small cars behind you. You can't depend on the RSS 100%. Treat it as a back-up aid; you still need to use your mirrors and verify if there's anything back there. Several guys on the Expedition board have backed into brick walls and trees. Also, it's worthless when it's raining (constant tone).

I've got an '04, no real issues. Love the backup sensors. Watch for the '05 fuel injector problem. They can destroy an engine.

well i went and looked at a 05 4x4 today, rather stripped down version, had the basics keyless/power window locks, but it didnt have fogs , salesman wouldnt budge off 24,500. it had 31k miles on it and certified but aint that still high? i seen alot on auto trader for 22 grand or so and just as nice. can anyone chime in more about the fuel injector problem?

$24,500 is about what I would expect for a loaded 2005 FX4 (Leather, Power Everything, RSS, etc...). For an XLT level truck, I'm thinking $20K or so.

I got no idea what fuel injector problems he's talking about. The '05 model had a few quirks:

6CD head unit would lock up (May 05 and older trucks) -- Dealer replaces unit
Head liner rattle (moon roof models) -- Dealer installs foam blocks under liner
Power rear window rattle -- dealer installs cloth back tape on window rails
Ash tray rattle -- dealer installs cloth back tape in ash tray compartment

I've got an '05 Screw XLT with <30k on it. I wouldn't let the 5.5 bed become a dealbreaker for you unless you really think you need the extra foot of bed. Most lumber yards only sell 8' lumber or 4x8' sheets of plywood/sheetrock, etc. so you will still have to ride with the tailgate down on a 6.6' bed. The reverse sensors are very nice. Above the basic XLT here are is my list of optional equipment: keyless keypad (on door), towing package, 3.55 Limited Slip, 5.4L, Reverse Sensors. The 4.6 will provide slightly less power with somewhat better mileage over the 5.4, either way it won't be fast even with the 5.4. I definately would want the keypad, reverse sensors, and towing package. The bed extender is ok although I take it out of the truck 50% of the time. I can't speak for the LS as I have not ever had a pickup without Limited Slip. By the way, I wouldn't pay 24 for that 05 4x4. Just me though. I'm satisfied with my purchase but I also got a good deal when new. I would use 80% of book value as your starting point for what you are willing to pay. The again who knows, my truck's retail value is $24,500 so 80% is $19,600. Let us know how is goes, you will find no shortage of advice on this forum.

Ford doesn't have many packages. Sometimes they will package equipment for a specific discount, but almost everything is availible individually.

Moonroofs and power sliders (an excellent combo!) was availbile on XLT, but not as common as FX4 & Lariat.

I forgot to mention the towing package. If you plan to tow, it was an excellent vaule because it adds the hitch, upgraded trans cooler an the 7-pin wiring. All can be added later, but it was a good package for something like $300.

Mine has it. I love it, but it has made me a lazy backer-upper.

Wow...I bought my '07 XLT for $650 more than that. I don't have any need for 4wd though, so mine is 2wd with a bunch of optional equipment.
