Noisy Rearend

Here is a very simple question for most everyone on here. On the drivers side of my 03 Supercrew the upper portion of the shock does not appear to be connected with a nut but moves freely or floats in the socket. Is this normal and\or is there suppose to be some kind of rubber bushing at the top of the shock. The reason why I am looking is that when I go over bumps I get a lot of noise in the rear end that would sound like the top of this shock pounding this socket. It could be that the shock is just bad and not being responive also. Either way anyone else had any experiences with this or know more about what I should be looking at? Thanks.
