Thanks for the Idea. I had been looking for a storage solution for jumper cables, Tie Down straps, etc. I looked at wheel well boxes, however I did not want to lose one of my tie down points. I already have a hard cover for the bed and a tool box was just not an option for me.

I built one of these today. I bought a 2" X 8" X 10', two corner gussets, Screws and carpet for $ 21.00. I built it and covered it in about three hours. I had to rip the 2 X 8 to the correct height. I saw how you "broke" the top of the corners. I decided to break the whole corner. I was able to purchase a 1' X 6' piece of grey carpet for $4.23 at Home Depot. The carpet looks good where the "public" can see it. The inside is not the prettiest, but it is functional and I'm the only one who will look at the inside.

Thanks again for the idea.

Sorry no pictures yet.

Awesome! Unfortunatley I'm working nights through Friday AM so I won't have a chance to carpet mine until the weekend. I think I'm also going to line the area inside the box with the carpet, to protect the original.

looks great, and you can add or remove dividers as needed

WalMart has a >10$ roll of grey carpet in automotive section, and should be a pretty close match in color, but not perfect match in texture

Very good job!! Impressive! .. check out Home Depot (I hate them too), but they do have ****loads of carpeting in all colors and textures.. Again, have to say I'm very impressed with what you've done there...

XLT-FX4, nice idea. Let us know when you get it carpeted and get pics of it. Might be willing to do the same in mine.

Not to Hi-Jack the thread but his is why I hate HD now:

I went to Home Depot tonight to pick up a vanity top for our bathroom remodel. The thing was 7 ft in length with dual bowls so a couple associates help load me up.

One jumped into the bed to pull the box in and the other was going to lift it up from the dolly and place it in as to not rub the the bed liner since it was still on a wooden pallet.

Well when one guy was pulling it in, the dolly got under the tailgate and once the vanity top was set into the bed, the truck went down on the dolly. I thought at first that it was just on the edge of the top plastic sicne I had to lift it up to pull it out. I guess the other end was screweded and apparently halfway under the tailgate.

Either way, once I got back home, unloaded and closed the tailgate, I saw the orange and the horrific scratches on the tailgate. I does not appear to have distorted the metal but got the truck pretty good.

I finally got around to getting the carpet on. I picked up a roll of gray auto carpet from Wal Mart for about $8.50. I used a combination of contact cement and a staple gun. I have enough carpet left over to line the area inside the box to protect the factory carpet.

That is a sweet job on that storage unit..

I am amased on how little under seat support there back there. I would like to do something similar on my 2002 but there are all sorts of seat braces back there that it wouldnt be worth it.

Looks fantastic !
I want to also put down throw down stuff also to protect the factory carpet as well. 8.50 seems cheap enough.

When do you plan on marketing it for those of use without the skills.

Great project. Thanks for the description. I'll try out the new table saw I bought yesterday.
