Question Whining Noise from '02 Supercrew

I have a 2002 Supercrew with about 57,000 miles on it. Recently, I have been hearing a high pitched whine come from somewhere underneath the truck. When it first started, it would only happen infrequently, and the whine would only last a few seconds. Today, it started out almost as soon as I got going, and would come and go, this time lasting up to 15-20 seconds at a time. The truck seems to drive fine other than the whining noise, the tranny appears to be shifting fine. The whine will usually end if I let up off the gas pedal. Today, I even put the truck in 4X4L and drove it around for a short time to see if the whine was present. I hardly heard it then, but it was there once or twice, though not nearly as bad as when it was in two wheel drive.

Any ideas on this one? Am I looking at needing to take out a second mortgage for repairs on the truck? Thanks in advance for any help..

Take a look in the "Other Powertrain" section and you can search for "rear end whine" and find a lot of threads about this common problem.

I'm in the same boat and actually have a thread up there right now.

Sounds pretty normal to me. If it's the rear end. Mine has done that pretty much since it was new. usually around 45 mph, if i let off of the gas it goes away.

My 02 SuperCrew does the samething since I got it new. Always whines a liitle bit right around 50 mph and stops as soon as I let of the gas.

That's the harmonics you hear from the Ring and Pinion gears in the rear axle due to backlash of a normal .005" -.007" clearance.

I got the same problem once the wife and kids hop in, but when I'm by myself I don't hear a thing.

I'd check all the powertrain fluids

There is a problem with rear end that Ford will only fix if you bring it up. specially if it is under warranty

Noise

My co-worker again, we changed his rear end alxe bearings. Took six hours and around $150 in parts, labor was free.
All that work and the noise did not go away.
He ended up changing pinion gears and noise went away. paid around $300 to fix
He owns a 2002 screw, mine is a 2001 screw.

My 01 has had a slight whine coming from the rear diff since I've had it. approx 100,000kms. Its never giving me a problem at all. I flushed the fluid in the rear diff and thats it. Its a common occurence in these trucks.
