4X4 Burning Smell, need help
4X4 Burning Smell, need help
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all,
Question. I just purchased a new 06 4x4 F150 for my wife. Honestly it is a little more vehicle than we need (commuting the kids to school). Having said that it rarely goes in to 4 whl drive. It now has 4k miles. I put it in 4 whl drive going up a gravel drive way a couple of times on our way to a friends house. Not that I needed to, only because I could. Drive way is 400 yards, slight grade up. Driving slow. I get to the top, get out of the truck and smell this odor, what appears to be coming from the back end. The best way to describe it is like burning oil, or burning brakes. This smell is only when in 4 whl drive. Took it to the dealer for the first service and mentioned this. They took it on a test drive, could smell it, and told me it is a break in smell, and it is coming from the catalytic converter. No problem.
If this is the case then I guess it's ok, but I don't want to have problems later if it's really not. Does anyone have experience with something similar to this. They said they would replace the catalytic converters if I wanted. I am unsure what to do. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Zak

We have had to replace (warranty from dealer) a lot of cat converters on our Crown Vic PD veh's (2004 and newer) and when we get them back, the car does smell some what. The smell does go away after a day or so. I would say that if the dealer offered to replace them free, might be something to consider. At least from my experience, Ford has had to replace a lot of bad cats. Inside come loose and rattles.

Thanks, I don't hear any rattling, and as i mentioned its only in 4X mode. So i am reluctant to drive around in 4X all day as that is not recommended particularly because I am not driving in off-road conditions. I'll let it go a little while, i guess, just concerned because I am rarely in 4X mode and don't want to let it go to long. Plus it's new. Shouldn't smell like someone lit the tires on fire....
Best,

burning oil
hi, dont know if this helps , but i just purchased an 07 screw.
it smelled like burning oil for over two days.
at first it was to hard to not notice , but it did go away .
and as far as it going away , with use it should .
was told its normal as parts have been coated for protection.
