I've been told that it can be very bad to run completely out of gas. From what I have heard you can ruin your fuel injectors. I don't know if that is true and I don't believe that will happen 100% of the time, but I am pretty sure it isn't worth the risk. I have heard of people running out of gas and having to get all new injectors on the other hand I have heard of people running out of gas and just putting more gas in and never having a problem. I think that it is a toss up between what will actually happen if you do run out, but I don't think that it is worth the risk. If there is no reason too run that low I would say try to avoid it. The furthest I have gone with the low fuel light on is about 15 miles (around one gallon) before I filled up. I'm sure I could have gone further, but I had the gas money in my hand when I came to the next store.

My mother-in-law's boyfriend is a mechanic at a Ford dealership. He told my wife that when the light comes on, there is about a 5 to 6 gallon reserve to prevent the fuel system from running dry/loosing prime. I'm guessing it must play havoc trying to prime the system if it should run dry.

*EDIT* I just read another post on the 2004-present forum. It lead me down a totally different path of thought. Maybe your computer is learning your driving habits. Take a look: https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=251927

I've put 27 gallons into my 25 gallon tank.

Guess the filler neck holds 2 gallons!

I was a little nervous trying to find a gas station, and apparently I should have been!

Constantly running your tank that low is bad for the fuel pump. Because it uses the to help keep it cool. So by continually running in down that low can cause the pump to build excessive heat(for the pump) and lead to premature failure. I am not saying it'll happen to you but you are increasing that chance.

Also, you can sometimes pick up some small particles in your tank. That's why the factory has a fuel filter. I would recommend changing the filter if you do run it out completely out of gas.
