K/R 4WD trouble

Hello all,

I just purchased a 2003 4x4 SuperCrew K/R, with 63,000 KM on the clock. I sometimes need to drive off-road for work so I have to use 4WD. The system engages fine, with a slight clunk (the lights do come on for 4HI and 4LO), and there seems to be some (normal) whining in the front end while driving in 4WD. However, there is no power whatsoever to the front wheels in 4WD, LO or HI. I have been stuck in mud a couple of times and the front wheels didn't help me at all.

I had a friend watch my wheels while spinning out, and the fronts didn't move an inch in spite of all the lights, clunks and whines signaling that 4WD was engaged :o

From my research so far I think that the front hubs might be at fault.

Any ideas whether I'm on the right track, or what else might it be??? Anyone else experiencing similar simptoms?

Any help is much appreciated,

Thanks,
Zoltan (Toronto, CA)

Hi Herman... I wish I knew the answer...

Since I don't, I'm going to COPY this thread to the SuperCrew forum as well. In short, your thread will appear in both the SuperCrew forum and the King Ranch forum. Be sure to check the SuperCrew forum as well as you may get some response in there...

Best of luck to you with this issue...

I am not one of the 4wd experts here, but I do know that your '03 does not have locking/unlocking hubs, so that is not your problem.

I'm guessing that your KR has an electronic 4wd selector **** on the dash. This means that the transfer case is shifted between 2wd, 4H and 4L by an electric motor on or in the transfer case. The problem could be in this area.

The front axle has a vacuum operated disconnect that keeps the front ring and pinion gears and the front driveshaft from spinning when you are in 2wd. If this system is malfunctioning, the front axle might not engage for 4wd.

There are others who are far more knowledgable on the 4wd system than I am, and hopefully one of them will chime in soon. In the meantime, the problem is not the locking/unlocking hubs, since you don't have any.
