Question Question for those w/ caps (toppers)

I've got a 2006 s-crew and looking seriously at Caps from pretty much all of the major manufacturers. One of the reasons I want a cap is to be able to easily put my canoe/kayaks/duck floats up top. I've seen rumblings of people not being able to find boat racks compatible with certain types of caps. Does anyone have any insight here? (which ones you can/can't get good boat racks for). Any info is appreciated.

I have a Leer 100XL, bought it to avoid hauling the dog in the cab with the rest of the family. I don't have the Thule roof rack on mine but my dad does and we can get one canoe or one flat bottom boat up top no problem. The track is integrated right into the topper and locks so the boat isn't going anywhere.

I didn't get the roof rack because I'd have to take it off everytime to get the truck into my garage.

I love my Leer, hasn't leaked a drop since install and I love being able to leave all of my hunting/camping/fishing gear locked up were it's easy to get at in the field.

I've got a Jason on my '01 and love it. Had a Leer on my '97 which I didn't like so much. Regardless, Yakima (and I think Thule) make brackets for vehicles with caps or that don't have rain gutters or factory rails. With the Leer, after some careful measuring to make sure the holes where in the right place, it was simply drilling two holes per bracket to mount them. Then the standard rack feet would attached to them. Worked great for me with boats and bikes on top. Allowed the racks to come off easily to get the truck into the garage. Yakima had done a good job with the kit. I never had a leak around any of the mounting bolts. You should be able to use them on any cap out there.

Yakima also makes a frame for carrying canoes.

SO if the cap is only for carrying canoes, you dont need it (if you dont really want one)

No...I definitely need the cap. (I wish I could just buy a rack). The last cap I bought was in the late 80's. They sure have gotten a heck of a lot more expensive since then.

you're not kidding.

I think they've tripled in price since the 80s (of course, so have the trucks )
