Question 4X4 will not disengage

I believe there is a problem with the 4X4 switch. The transfer case or hubs seem to be "stuck" in four high. I have tried backing up, stopping, turning the switch, going forward, stopping, turning the swith, turning the wheel etc., but to no avail. I bought the truck used from a local dealer in May of 2005 and did not get so much as a factory manual with it, so I am turning to you all for some advice. Is there a fuse or relay that may be blown or do any of you have any suggestions as to what may be causing the problem or a way to correct it? I have a loud howling when I drive the truck at the moment and as you know, typically the cab is pretty quiet. Last time I used 4 low was to get through about a foot of mud over a 100 yard stretch and I have pressure washed away evrything that I can see that may contribute to the problem underneath. FYI - currently the truck has 150,000 kms (94,000 miles) or so on it. Truck had 70,000 kms when I bought it. I do my own servicing, but am thinking that I may have missed an important check up or servicing somewhere along the way.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Same thing happened to me in 4 low after some hard off-roading.It took some time but slowly moving back and forth and turning wheel dissengaged it after 20 minutes of swearing.I bet same thing is happening to you.Good luck

my understanding is that the Ford vacuum system has 4x4 as a default position. You need vacuum to hold 2wd. So basically, it sounds like you've lost vacuum.
