In todays market, you should do this, it will save you lots of money:
A. Ask to see the Ford Invoice for the Vehicle to assure they are selling it to you at cost.
B. Ask to get 1/2 of the Dealer holdback, around $500 - $600. It is on the invoce. If you don't know what it is, you can play the game and just say, I want 1/2 of the Dealerholdback and it is likely you can see the correct figure on the Manufactures Invoice. Destination charges are not negotiable. After you get these figures then be sure they give you the Dealer Incentive. I think you stated it was $3500.
Also, if you are a cash buyer, you might consider financing because you can get an additional $1000. cash. You must make four payments. This is how it went for me recently. Traded in a 2001 Ford Eddie Bauer Explorer & bought a Escape Limited 2006 for my wife. Got Dealercost, half of the dealerholdback, $2000. Ford Rebate, $500 Denver Auto Show Rebate, and an additional $1000. for financing thru Ford Credit.
My first payment included the payment amount, plus $13,000. The second the payment plus $500, the third will be the payment plus about $250. and the last payment will be about $29.00. Thus, I got the $1000. finance incentive and paid them only about $90. in total interest. Thus, I got almost the full $1000 incentive for the brief financing option.
You may not be able to do it this way, but try all options and you will save money. Semper Fi

Also have them knock off an extra $1000 for the dealership sticker they put on there, becasue they are getting free advertising for themselves as you drive the truck around.
If they say no tell them that you dont want it on there or that you dont want the truck then and you will go somewhere else. You are not required to have their logo on your vehicle. Usually you they will settle for about half that amount in my own personal experience.
Then I pull the sticker/lettering off the next day.
Hey they want to make the sale, you just got to be able sometimes to walk away from the deal and say no. Usually the will come back and accept your offer.

You do not need to make four payments to Ford motor credit (they just tell you that.) We just bought a new 06 screw built just for us. We financed with Ford to get the $4000 in rebates and refinanced with out CU as soon as I called Ford Finance for the account number. We never made a single payment to Ford. We also got 2 years free maintenance on top of the rebates.
The tax you pay should be on the amount you are financing after rebates not before.
It sounds like your dealer is trying to keep some of the rebate amount by making you pay tax on it.
And if you don’t believe me about the payments to Ford Credit, just give them a call and ask. (Ford motor credit not the dealer) When you sign the loan papers it states in big type that there is no penalty for early payment.
