Service Engine Soon
Service Engine Soon
This morning our 2001 Supercrew, with the smaller V8 ran a bit rough and the service light came on saying SERVICE ENGINE SOON. Any easy fixes I can try before taking it into the dealer?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Get the actual code numbers, not what the AutoZone guy thinks it is, write them down, and either post them back in your thread or do a search here.
Is it reasonable to think water spilling out of the rear of the bed, while drivng away got something wet.... Sure your bumper got wet.
If the water did cause it ( don't know if it did or not without the DTC ) something needs to be fixed, trucks are kind of water proof and water should not make them do stuff like this.
There are only about 1000 DTCs in the list to choose from, want to roll the diagnostic dice, and take a guess ?

It is a toss up between using the red one and the green one. Start with red...

Good timing, my Service Engine Soon light just came on this afternoon when I sped up to pass someone on the highway..
Guess I'll be taking it in to the dealer...

my service engine light came on while I was in canada last fall, took it to a dealer up there, he scanned it for me and said it was the egr valve. said it was okay to continue driving it til I got back in the states and wasn't even going to charge me.(took him all of about 3 minutes) gave him a $20 for his troubles and went on our way.
Got back down here and eventually replaced it. (month later) disconnected the battery to reset the codes and everything appears fine. a day later, the check engine light is on again... any ideas? do i have to have it cleared with a tool? or does disconnecting the battery for a while clear it?
The dealer here in the states wants to charge me a min of $70 to scan it just to find out why the service engine soon light is on.

jewester,
If you have an AutoZone near by, they will scan it for free, or Garge got a loaner one from them. Got me, I never had to try either method.
Either way, get the DTC number from the scanner, and :
a) do a search for the P0xxx number(s) you get
or
b) start a new thread with the DTC, I would suggest in the engine section ( more views )
Sorry the guy in CAN did an AutoZone employee scan & suggest, look at the DTC, and give the more common cause of the problem.
Some DTCs have 12 things to check ( not replace ) in the diagnoses list. Sucks, but it happens. It could be as simple as a VAC leak, and some VAC line might be all it takes to fix.
At least that is what I got, for a suggested fix, when I rolled the Orange die

i got the code... i'll post it exactly in here tomorrow from work... however.. it says egr valve insufficient flow... I had replaced the egr valve... but didn't check the lines i gues. they reset the code for me and it's been a week and it hasn't come back on... could it have been the lines?
update.. did a quick search... see there are many problems with egr type issues... the most common is this sensor orclogged ports... i guess i will take the hoses off and check them.

man our trucks 01-03 Supercrews sure do seem to have a lot of the same problems egr, plugs, ball joints etc. I mean it seems like everyone with these year models is always having the same problems. Did Ford just slack these years have there been any recalls on this stuff
same thing here, 01 screw 4.6. egr flow crap. i ignor the light for now. it runs perfect (118k miles)
sooner or later i will get around to removing and cleaning the port under the egr.
if anyone has a better idea i would be interested to hear

I don't know why the 4.6L has this problem, where the 5.4L does not ( for a general statement ).
If you want to take the quick test after you get it done( and don't have a code scanner with a DTC clear option on it ) disco the battery for 5 to 10 min, reconnect, and take it for at least 2 drive cycles.
The bigger problem is that of people trying to repair a for a 401 code with no knowledge of how that part of the system works, why and when the fault code is set and the lamp lights.
A search here will find a very complete explanation of how this works.
The computer takes two or more drive cycles to set a 401 code and light the lamps. Just keeping cancling the lamp is not the way. Keeping bebooting the computer is not the way. Doing this makes the system have to relearn all operational data not just clears the code.
Test out the full EGR system and see what is or is not working and save all the greif, then clear the code.
Deeper scanning can detect if the fault was fixed without the drive cycles but 99% of people don't have a scanner that goes to that mode level.
If anyone is a bit insulted by this then you have now learned what your dealing with and why you don't have sucess so quickly.
Seem like no body wants to tell it like it is.

My supercrew w/ the 4.6 w/ about 60k would intermittenly run rough but never flashed an engine light. I removed all the plugs, cleaned, placed antiseize on threads, & reinstalled. didn't help much. I then just replaced them all except for the # 8 which I dropped into the intake pan. I figured I would just clean the old one up & just stick it back in. This seemed to help for about a month & then about 3 days ago it started running really rough & flashed a code...finally. Took it to auto zone( which I really don't trust as far as diagnosing) & they put a scanner on it. It took all of a minute & told me I was misfiring on the #8 cylinder. Just replaced the plug & it seems to be running fine. Take it to auto zone for a free scan.
