k&n air filter

i am wanting to get a k&n air filter for my 01 supercrew and i was asking a guy at the ford place about them and he said they can actually hurt the performance of the truck. is this true? it was new on me. i thought they increased gas milege and horsepower. i was about ready to buy one to and he said that the ford motocraft ones are as good. do any of you here run k&n filters? how do they perform? thanks for the help.

The only way they may hurt performance is if some of the il gets on the MAF sensor. Sometimes the filters are overoiled when your buy them and it gets on the MAF sensor. Not a big deal, just use some electronic parts cleaner on the MAF sensor.

Do you want an OEM replacement (drop in) or the full kit with new intake pipe?

I had the K&N drop in on my 99 F-150. After a couple years, I made the poor man's intake with it. On my 2003 F-150 I got the Air Force One. I didn't notice any difference in fuel economy or performance with either. My advice is to buy the K&N drop in filter for longevity because you can clean it, not for performance.

That MAF sensor is a pain in the butt to get to to clean though. To really make sure it is clean you have to remove it which requires a special driver. The other method is to leave it in place and shoot the solvent through the air intake and hope you have good aim and a little luck.

I've had the K&N drop-in since new on my '03. It doesn't give you any better fuel efficiency, but I think it does help the engine breathe a little better. Maybe gives one or two more horses, but I just like the fact that it flows better and you can clean and re-use it. The paper filters get clogged quickly and really can cut down on the air flow. With the K&N it doesn't seem to get clogged so fast in my opinion. Just my $.02 worth.

It really isn't that difficult to spray with the air filter removed. The OEM intake tube is flexible.

I found that on my old ranger the K&N filter would actually let dust through it. Granted it was a high dust environment that I was driving in but there was a coating of dust on everything inside the intake tube. This wasa brand new one that had been properly oiled. I won't use them again.

They are alot of hype IMHO, trust me they are nice but don't expect anything close to what their ads claim.

I read the replys and have to agree 100%...As I have the K&N now I just leave it there but I will never buy one again...I see no gain in the 2 I got...
