Supercrew Makes Heavy Sound when.....

For my 2001 Triton V-8 with 115,000 miles, when I am stopped and I am turning left or right (never happens when pulling forward) and accelerate......I get a heavy vibration and thumping sound from rear end. Had a mechanic tell me it was my rear end slip mechanism.....he packed with Ford grease and told me that it would take 100 miles or so for the grease to work and then the vibration and hammering would go away........

Does this make sense?? Is it common??

Need help and guidance please,

Thanks in advance.

I've got the same thing happening on my 2003 V8 5.4. It only happens when turning left from a dead stop and very infrequently. Unfortunately it is starting to happen a bit more, so it looks like I have a trip to the shop in my future.

Any ideas on what is causing it?

They did the grease thing on car lots years back for vels with bad rear ends,so they didn't have to fix them and added saw dust too keep the noise down. The mechanic must be from the old school of repair. Get it fixed the right way before it gos all the way out,all that grease will heat up your bearings and cost you more than what you started out for repair on the clutch packs being replaced.

Screwtech,
Can U possibly copy paste that tsb or ssm? I am having same problem from stop I get this shuddering when I am turning. I want to get this fixed straight away but want the education to go in and say what I want exactly. The truck is doing same as others as I am taking off and turning there is this shuddering and I couldnt figure it out. Thought maybe my wheels were rubbing but ruled that out. Then thought it was a arm going bad or bent or something but nothing looked damaged.
I have tried to look this up under recalls and tsb's, however I can only get it to say what is wrong. Wont tell me what the fix is or what to do about it.

Thanks for any help.

I'm having the same problem with my 2002 SC FX4 @ 85,000 miles. Just got an estimate from my dealer for $600 to $650 ($200 - $250 for parts & approx 6 hours of labor @ $65 per hour).

Does this sound about right?

I am getting roughly the same quotes. I was told by one guy that he would recomend replacing the whole Diff. with an aftermarket and it would be roughly about $880 for the replacement. His only business is fixing and replacing Differentials. He also said that if I chose to go the $650 to $700 route that it would be nothing more than putting Ford parts back into same diff. and that I could have same problems again in roughly 50k miles like Im having now.
The thing that really has me torqued is that it doesnt happen all of the time really only when its cold. So I am not sure just how serious of a problem it is and that it needs to be done right away or not.
Anyone else having these issues or has had these issues and what did you guys do. I am leaning more towards total replacement and not doing the bandaid work.
