Help in buying a used Supercrew
Help in buying a used Supercrew
I need some help!
I am selling/trading in my ranger. I am simply tired of driving a truck you have to treat like a car.I bought my '98 ranger with 90000 miles, and its literally falling apart mechaniclly at 12000.
I have been looking at the crews quite a bite, and I like what I see. My problem is all of the trucks that are in my price range are usually 2001-2002 high mileage models. I need 4x4, nothing else really matters. I would like some input from some crew owners. Is mileage in the 90-100000 mile range something to be afraid of. I assume some things will need to be fixed/serviced. I cant find much info online about 2001-2002 crews that lists problems or performance once they are getting some practical use.
What do I need to look for when getting a crew with higher mileage?
4.6 or 5.4? which one has less problems?what problems should I expect? Basiclly I just want a truck that I can depend on, that I wont have to pour money into when I drive it 30000 miles.Sound off. I would really appreciate it.

There is nothing particular to worry about with any F-150. Just the usual abuse that any vehicle can get. By 100k miles, the ball joints have probably been replaced at least once. Shocks are good for 10k miles (yes, 10k, not 100k), but many people never change them. Plugs are rated for 100k miles, so find out if they've been changed yet. The back two are a PITA, but still <1h to do with a couple extensions & swivels.
I wouldn't touch a 4x4 Screw w/ the 4.6L persoanlly, but there are plenty out there so some people must find them acceptable. It's a great motor, just not for moving 5500+ pounds.

I bought an 01 4x4 last year. Had 103,000 miles. Maintenance history was evident with the receipts in glove box. Had A frames and battery replaced, and the usual maintenance upkeep. Since buying it I have had to replace exhaust manifold gaskets, both sides. Passenger side is common for bolts rusting then breaking. Both bolts closest to firewall. I do have a slight rattle in the head liner, have researched this site, found lots of fixes, just don't have the time. Had to replace drives door window/lock control panel. Other than that sweet truck. Great ride, lots of power, great 4x4 action also. Did super this hunting season. Plan on replacing shocks, going to Ranchos, soon as bonus money comes in.

I bought my 2003 Screw back in October(??) and haven't had any problems except the clutch in the rear end was replaced - while still under warranty.
My truck had just under 60,000 mi and it's 4x4 with the 5.4L. I absolutely LOVE this truck!
I, too went from a 2002 Ranger Edge extended cab 4.0L - what a difference!!!! Plenty of power now to pull the boat AND take the family with me!!!!!

Any vehicle with 90-100,000 miles on it will start to have problems in short order. It's not a big deal if the truck is paid for, but it's another matter all together to get nickel and dimed for small repairs on a vehicle you're still making payments on.
If you want a dependable truck, I would highly suggest looking for a well maintained truck with under 50K miles on it. If you can't afford anything better than a worn out SCrew with high miles, it's time to look at something else.
The 4.6L is a tad underpowered for a Super Crew. They get good highway miles, but they're a dog getting the beast going.

Purchased a 2001 4x4 5.4 with 89,000. Now have 104,000. Runs great, the only thing I have had to do is new plugs (big job), tires and new drivers side mirror.
I added a Undercover Tonneau Cover (love it) Huskey liners, bed mat and just ordered Enkay rock tamers adjustable mud flaps that I can use on both the F150 and F350. It has origional shocks and will be replacing them in next few months.
I pull a 18 foot enclosed trailer with three atv's and it does fine.
I like driving it better than my 2004 F350 4x4 SC with the 6.0.
Good luck finding one, I spent several weeks on the internet and found a great one at a great price.
