I agree use the Xplan if you can take all the reabates some cash and or trade, and you will be far from upside down. Don't think the Ford F150 depreciates anymore than any other US built truck of the same class!

you can or could get the FX4 with the Lariat. at least back in 2003. i'm sure that you can still do that with the newer ones. all the FX4 package is skid plates and Rancho shocks. when i looked back in '03 that option was $2100 bucks i figured i could not justify paying that much for 3 pieces of sheet metal, shocks and a fancy decal.

2002/2003 FX4 was an option package availible on XLT and LAriat trim levels. 2004/2005 FX4 is a unique tri level.

My 03 lists the FX4 package at $705, MSRP.

I have an 01 with the "off road package". Wasnt this replaced in 02 with the FX4? Same things (just different decals), right?

FX4 is a package, not a trim option. The FX4 package consists of the 3V 5.4L Engine, electronic shift-on-the-fly 4X4, off-road shocks, skid plate, limited slip differential and bar style grill (Current Ford Description).

If one is unhappy with the depreciation of their fairly new vehicle, they probably paid too much for the thing in the first place. I've got a simple rule; never pay more for a new truck than the retail value of a comperable truck from the previous model year.

If you're trading in a vehicle on a new one, demand the retail value (at a minimum) for your trade-in. I try to buy vehicles that are loaded. Makes it much easier to sell down the road. I was able to get $11.5K for my '97 XLT last week (I only paid $19K for it 8 years ago!). Condition and options pay off when you sell.

Bought a Lariat Crew (2001) in Oct. of 2000, traded it in last month for a 2005 Lariat, got $12.5K for it and it had 81K miles on it....didn't think that was bad at all............

sgauthier I think hit the nail on the head. Gas prices are killing the truck/SUV market as far as resale. At least, it's quite noticeable up here in the NE. My friend had a 2003 Excursion Lariat V-10 4x4 fully loaded with leather and just about every bell-and-whistle you could think of. I believe he payed just about 30k for it with 10k miles on it. He went to trade it in to buy an F350 Supercrew 4x4 and many of the dealers he was talking to were talking trade-in value just around $12,000!!!!

Talk about a hit!!!

If you buy a Ford, drive it for 5-10 years and take care of it yopu'll get your moneys worth out of it and still have some resale value.

Reminds me of the old real estate truism: You make your money when you buy, not when you sell.

My '05 4x2 Screw was stickered at $33k plus; the deal was $24k and change, self-financed with no trade or other considerations. So, whoever mentioned the $9k discount was right on the money.

Yeah, it's the employee discount plus rebates that kill resale value for people who purchased previously.

My '05 4x4 Lariat Screw was stickered 43K, but I drove it off the lot for 32K. Probably helped that my wife kept say "Nope, let's go", evertime the sales person opened his mouth. "Yes, dear!" The poor guy kept looking at me for help. Also, since the truck was already loaded, they didn't have much of a chance to tack on extra charges.

That's a good price too! I've heard Ford has eliminated all other incentives while the Family Plan is in effect, and that the price is in fact less negotiable (and consequently higher) now. I think there's a psychological impact to the "employee discount" offer that eliminates the need to discount so deeply.
