Leaking diff cover. . .help!

For some strange reason, I decided to look under my truck today and noticed that the bottom portion of my differential cover was wet with oil. It wasn't dripping oil onto the ground, but it was wet to the touch. I won't be able to fix it for a couple more weeks and I'm wondering if I need to be worried about harming my axle if I continue to drive it. I'm actually quite irritated by this considering I just replaced both axle seals last summer because one blew out on me. I love my truck but I seem to be having some poor luck when it comes to axles. Any opinions?

Just ckeck the fluid level and make sure it doesnt get worse. As long as your fluid level stays OK it will wait.

WHEN YOU DROP THE COVER IF YOU USE SILICONE TO SEAL IT MAKE SURE YOU GIVE TIME TO DRY BEFORE YOU PUT FLUID BACK IN.
JUST KEEP IT FULL

I know Ford doesn't make a true gasket for the cover, but has anyone ever got a sheet of gasket material and cut out their own? I'd feel a lot more confident in a real gasket as opposed to just the goo stuff.

I had trouble with a leaking cover, but after getting it right, I haven't had any problems with it in 4 years. However, if I had to redo it, I would seriously consider replacing the stock diff cover with a Mag-Hytec - very nice looking and very good features like:
  • Greater Oil Capacity
  • True O-Ring
  • Magnetic Drain Plug
  • Finned Housing

Worth it for $2xx - esp if you do it yourself.

I agree. This item is on my mod list. If you're not interested in one, don't downplay silicone as a sealant. I'd rather have a silicone type RTV-properly applied- than a gasket any day of the week.

Love my Mag-Hytec, looks great, no leaks, cooler temp and holds more fluid.
