Advice on buying a supercrew needed
Hey guys, new here and looking for some advice. I’m looking to get the wife a super crew soon and don’t really know much about them or anyone who has one to ask, anyway just wanting as much information as you guys would like to share as far as:
Any and all pro / cons
Particular yr's to avoid, looking at something in the 02-04 ranges
Mileage 4.9? vs. 5.4 2x4 and 4x4
Over all power
Towing abilities and handling
Comfort (currently have one 3.5 yr old boy, and another on the way
thus the need for a bigger truck)
And anything else you guys can think of
thanks
stay safe out there

I love my Screw and would highly recommend getting one. I would try to find one with a 5.4 engine, but I wouldn't turn one down because of the 4.6 engine if it was in good shape and had the options I wanted. The 5.4 just has more power and gets about the same gas milage as the 4.6. My truck has the split bench seat up front which really resembles bucket seats. The center portion of the seat folds down to make a console. When I need to seat 6, I just fold it up. The first year of the Screw was 2001. There were a few changes during the model year (generation 1, 2 and 3) that basically dealt with the seats. They added rear head rests and changed the front seats. The 2001 generation 3 Screws are basically identical to the 2002 and 2003 trucks. In 2004, all of the F-150's were completely redesigned. As far as 4x2 vs. 4x4, you just need to decide if you need four wheel drive or not. The 01-03 4x4's sit about 3 inches higher than the 4x2's. If you like the look of a 4x4 but don't need it, you can save money by buying a 4x2 and lifting it. Insurance is cheaper and gas milage is better on the 4x2's also. I love my Screw so much, I tried to talk my wife into buying a second one, but she wanted an Expedition instead. Hope this helps.
I believe wandell summed it up pretty good. The only thing I want to comment on is if you plan on towing a lot, I recommend the 5.4 with the tow package, other than that, just follow what wandall stated. Good luck.
HI - I own an '01 4x2 Screw, and I love it! As far as hauling kids goes, we have three kids ages 5, 3, and 1, and we can fit all three in the back (with carseats) very easily. I included a pic (it's a tad outdated, we have turned my youngest one's carsear around since). The kids have plenty of room, and really like riding in the truck.
I might add since I bought mine I've done a mild lowering job (1"/2"), and installed running boards so the kids can get in on their own easier. (Okay, that's not really why I put the drop on, but it helped in the convincing department!) It also made it easier to get my youngest in the middle seat (14 months and the little guy already weighs 34 lbs . . .)
Good luck, and let us know what you get!

I have an '05 FX4 and I average about 15.8 mpg on highway, but I haven't checked city wise. Most of my driving is highway though. I think if you can afford the 4x4, then you should get, I think it rides better than 4x2. Good luck and I am sure you will love the supercrew as much as everyone else that owns one.
I'm getting 15-16 in town and 17-19 on the road. (4.6), and it has 116K on it and still runs perfectly . . .

my 02 was best family investment we ever made....4x4...xlt loaded..great for anything....
can take it hunting in mud trails etc...yet get it home and clean it up and take the missus out in style and make a broad statement on the road(Bright Red Clearcoat color).
Would by another one or two.

I have three children- 7mo, 6 and 9 Y.O., and my screw does it all- with a cap on the back, my two labs go along as well. In the summer, we hook up the 25 foot travel trailer and bring the house with us. We also load the truck to its gills, and head out on the beach- 10 miles of sand. As for mileage, well- dont buy the truck thinking its a fuel miser. It's not. But thats the price you pay for being able to haul everything. If you spend more time just hauling yourself around, then maybe a Focus should be in your sights. I average about 14 to 16 MPG, I fill up once a week, and its 50 to 60 bucks. Bottom line to ask any of us is- "would you buy another one ?" For me, that would be a YES. (Although, with the kids, I wish I had checked off the leather option when I ordered it... that damned cloth is a Bee-yotch to clean Chocolate Shakes out of!

'03 FX4 with a 5.4 here. Average in the upper 15's in mpg with mixed driving.
I'd never buy another personal truck without the 4 doors. Once you get used to them........
Sure is a sweet ride. Happy, so far.
Best of luck.

I searched and searched and searched to find just the right supercrew for my needs. I couldn't swing a new '05, so I was on the lookout in the used market.
I knew I wanted the 5.4L as most people have stated the mileage difference betweent the two is minimal. And I think the bigger engine has to work less hard and may last longer- at least that has worked for me with my other Ford trucks.
I found a mint '01 this month with only 17k miles on it! On the advice of others, I was looking for the limited slip differential. I tend to like the grey interior over the tan as gray hides dirt better and I think looks better years down the road. I would've liked front buckets with the center consol over the 60/40 front seats, but I couldn't pass on the deal I got.
I just put on the Harley S-Crew front radiator panel my bodyshop friend got off an crashed up vehicle. Looks much better than the stock "honeycomb" panel in front.
I love my Supercrew!

I have an 01 Screw with off road, 5.4 and tow package. Just got it 2 weeks ago for $15.5K and only 45K miles. Already put 1200 miles on it and am avergaing 15 mpg which is fair. Took it into 4wd today as the back roads in the country were muddy. In fact need 4 low to get up one road and it was purring nicely doing the job. Plenty of low end torque with the 5.4 which may be where it has the biggest advantage over the 4.6. Neighbor has the 4.6 2wd and that trick had plenty of power on the interstate. So unless you are doping a lot of towing the 4.6 may suit you just fine. For the price, I couldnt turn down my truck.
