rubbing and grinding

I've had my '02 Lariat SCrew for a little over a motnh now. Over the past 3 weeks, I've noticed a rubbing fromt he right side. I figured with 26,000 miles on it, it could be a rotor or brake pad going bad. So I saw no need to rush into the dealer,....until yesterday.

While pull into a drive-thru for an iced tea, I rolled th windows down to listen closer. The sound of metal crunching with minor suspension articulation, and the wheels rubbing off/on scared the hell out of me. I got to the dealer within 3 hours.

The dealer supposedly cleaned a huge amount of rust build-up off the rotors, polished the surfaces and I was on my way in less than 2 hours. When the brakes heated up over the next 30 minutes, the sound retunred.

I have another appointment tomorrow. Any ideas what I should be watchful for. Being that the dealer released the vehicle, supposedly cured in such a fast time, and the problem clearly wasn't fixed, I don't have a lot of confidence in the dealer (but I'm still under warranty).

Does the sound occur when you apply the brakes? I'm thinking it could be your brake pad wear indicators. If that's what it is I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be taking my truck to that dealer again, as they should have found that.

Good luck.

out of the shop this morning from a 2.5 hour visit the dealer changed the rear rotors, machined the front rotors, verified 50% remaining life to the front pads and replaced the emergency brake assembly.

The cyclical rubbing sound is gone. It was present even without pedal pressure. The center caps on the rims apear to be the sound of the loose metal I was hearing. The caps were removed and the sound was gone. They were put back on in a different position over the lug nuts and the rattling is gone.

BUT......(and you knew it was coming)

now there is substaintial squeal/squeak under braking.

Since I just got the truck, all was covered by warranty so far, but pad repalcement will be my bill. I can accept that. Does this sound reasonable to assume that the pads ar ethe only thing left to do?

I was told at 25,000 miles that my 02 needed front brakes. It doesn't seem too unreasonable to me now;-) It did at the time! Up until that point I thought brakes were supposed to last longer than that.

I did put off having the fronts done until 32,000,and then again at 33,000 then the rears at 38,000 then the fronts again at 39,000...I think the front rotors are warped again at 46,000. I did replace the rotors at the 33,000 re-do...@#*!! Midas!

Anyway, I think I would do like so many others posting here, and spring for good slotted/drilled rotors, and good pads (ceramic is what I think most people go with). I did put ceramic pads on the rear. They seem pretty good!

For what its worth!

Regards,
Kevin

Thanks Kevin. I appreciate the response.

Voop.Voop.Voop...SSSQQQUUEEAAAKK. all day today,.....again.

I'll go for ht pad change this week through Ford, but I was thinking about how much a full brake upgrade would cost.

I just hate to dump a grand into a truck I just bought. I've had it less than a month.
