Anyone replaced pinion seal themselves
Anyone replaced pinion seal themselves
My pinion seal has a slow leak and I would like to replace it but I don't want to pay someone else to do what I can. Has anyone changed this themselves? If so, how extensive is it? I would assume you have to pull the axles out. Remove the ring and pinion assembly and the driveshaft to get the old one out.
Well, yes and no. Typically, shops drop the driveshaft, measure the pinion preload, pull the pinion nut and companion flange, pry the seal out, install a new seal, slide the companion flange back on, slowly tighten the OLD pinion nut back down to the original pinion preload, and re-install the driveshaft. It's quick, easy, and all done up front. There are several problems with this method: A) The crush sleeve is a one time use part and complete axle disassembly is required to replace it. B) proper pinion preload is measured with only the pinion assembly installed in the housing with a new crush sleeve; once again, requires complete disassembly. C) Pinion nuts are one time use items. So, what you have is a choice. A smart mechanic that replaces it with the first method would offer no guarantee.
Thanks for the reply, I might just check around to see what a good shop would charge. My main problem is that I don't trust anyone else with my stuff, so I usually do it myself.
