Common Problems and Gas Mileage?

I am in the position to purchase a 2003 Supercrew from a family member at the right price. The truck is an xlt 2wd with the 5.4L. Has anyone had a lot of problems with these trucks? The Engine only has 15k on it and it has been babied. I was just wondering if there is anything that i should be aware of before i take the dive. The Current owner swears that this thing with a 5.4L 3.55 LS rear-end 2wd and bed/cap will get 18-20mpg. Is he blowin smoke? I just find it hard to believe that when i only get about 14-16mpg with my '98 4.2L 5spd driving it very easy. What do some of you get Gas Mileage wise? Thanks in advance and God Bless

Ah, go ahead and jump right in, the water in here is fine. 15K and a 2003 means you'll still have a warranty if something fails. Besides, if the price is right and you don't like it, won't be hard to sell or trade...

You cannot beat knowing the history of the vehicle. Buying a used vehicle is always a crapshoot. But when you know who owned it and how they treated it, that is peace of mind that is hard to put a value on.

Well I will not candy coat it

I own a 2003 F-150 supercrew XLT 4x4 with the 5.4 and a limited slip rear end. I am in the process of lemon law suit for breach of warranty. If you go and test drive the truck travel with it around 45 to 52 mph underload. If the rear end doesn't whine you should be ok. If it does DO NOT TOUCH it. Ford can't fix it. I have had them put three sets of gears in mine and replace the carrier with no luck. I have had some other issue also. All in all I like the truck its just the principle of the matter. You pay out the #$@ for a truck and they can't fix it.

Good Luck

Go for it the lemons are very few and far between. I get 16 mpg on mine. 18 is a bit of wishful thinking. Maybe with cruise on and a 350 mile highway trip below 70mph.

I have an 01 4x4 S-crew with the 5.4 and I average almost 14 city, 15-16 freeway. I took a trip a few weekends ago and got over 19 of the freeway but I think it may have been a fluke. Good tailwind or something. I will check it this weekend as I am making another roadtrip, about 4 hours round trip. My brother has a 01 2x4 with the 4.6 and he gets as much as 20+ on the highway. I swear it to be the truth. He has put a lot of highwya miles on his truck and has consistantly been over 20. As for mechanical, my truck is flawless. Has 78K on it (bought it with 65K from orig. owner) and I have had very few things that needed any attention. Keep her maintained and she should treat you alright. Chuck.

I definatly think that 18 mpg is probably a reasonable number, of course it all depends on how you drive. Especially being a family member, the will not jerk you around and you should be confident with the buy. Like I said before, Go for it and Enjoy, these trucks are awsome!

18 is a believable number but, only if you're light on the pedal and don't accelerate hard...

Another thing to look for that hasn't been mentioned is the ever so common leaky rear window.

Look up at the top passenger side of the rear glass and ensure that there aren't any water markings. This tends to be a common occurance in this immediate area (it leaked on my old 01 before having it fixed under warranty.)

03 Screw 5.4 4x2 with 3.55

I average about 15mpg in the city with mixed driving. That 18 is only going to be achieved on a long road trip driving at a constant speed of bout 70 mph or so. I have had no major problems with my 03 and have not hear about a lot of probs with this year model compared to the 04's. I now have about 33k on mine at this time. I suggest you search the messsage boards on the 03's for prevalent probs and put the truck through the paces and see how it performs.
